Exterior Overview
If you’re an educated consumer, you are likely shopping domestic 4Runners and Hilux Surfs side by side. If that’s the case, it’s important to note these Surfs have a slightly better-equipped interior, some visual upgrades absent from the 4Runer models, and a more aggressive 4WD system. If that wasn’t appealing enough, the JDM examples typically are in better shape having logged fewer miles. This 1996 is just such a rig, and offered for sale with a mere 60k verified and documented miles on the clock. Powered by the same robust quad cam V6 sold here in the US, this Surf is barely broken in and fresh off a recent service. Set off by 16″ OEM refinished alloys, a stylish rear spoiler, OEM spare tire swingarm, OEM rainguards, OEM side steps, and some subtle rear privacy tint. The Azure Blue (8L6) paint is in good shape aside from some light chips, dings, and scuffs associated with normal use. Perfect as a reliable daily driver, cool campsite crawler, or weekend kid hauler, this Japanese Classic is inexpensive to own, practical, and versatile.

Interior Overview
The cabin is in above-average shape and includes a few factory and aftermarket upgrades. For this new generation Surf, safety became a priority. Dual front SRS airbags became standard as did ABS. The dash material was upgraded, and this one lacks any cracking or distortion. The center stack is close by and the automatic climate control system is mounted atop it. Cold A/C or piping hot heat can be cycled through the cabin at a moment’s notice, and if your passengers prefer more natural ventilation, the rear glass, side windows, and power moonroof can be opened for additional airflow. The driver benefits from a tilt-adjustable steering column, power locks, and adjustable electric side mirrors. Other neat OEM options include the power rear under mirror. With the flick of a switch, a sizable convex mirror drops down from the rear spoiler to make the driver aware of anything that is behind the rear bumper when reversing to park. The Moon Mist upholstery is in good shape and lacks any major rips, stains, or tears, The driver benefits from the optional adjustable lumbar support, and rear passengers can 4-way recline their seat backs for optimal comfort. The rear row also can split fold and tumble forward to create a flat loading floor with more cargo volume. The door cards, carpets, and headliner are in fine shape and have withstood the past 25 years without sustaining major abuse. Rounding out the cabin, a Pioneer radio upgrade fills the cockpit with tunes and the sound quality is decent for a vehicle of this vintage. While the passenger side mirror’s power folding feature doesn’t work, it still can be manually folded, and overall there is little to complain about inside the cockpit and we think the new American owner will agree!

Mechanical Overview
The real body on frame platform is a tough one, and the same thing can be said for the 5VZ-FE under the hood. Fresh off an oil and filter service, the 3.4L whirrs to life care of a new 12v battery. A new fuel filter, six new spark plugs, new plug wires, and an intake air filter work in unison to properly combust the fuel and maximize power. We addressed a few oil leaks to refresh the V6 and give it a new lease on life. One of our trained techs has replaced the valve cover gaskets and half-moon seals. While we were in there we also replaced the cam plugs for good measure. The engine is linked to a stout automatic that shifts just as it should. It’s connected to a selectable transfer case that allows the driver to choose between 2WD and 4WD on the fly. Even better an optional center locking differential was spec’d, which allows the pilot to split toque 50/50 fore and aft. If that isn’t enough, a low-range multiplies torque to keep this Hilux trudging forward. The suspension can handle the rigors of daily use and abuse and the Surf feels connected for a SUV. New front sway bar links were added prior to this truck passing the VA state safety inspection. The power steering is direct and on point and grip is handled by four new 31″ Falken all-terrain tires. The rubber will last for tens of thousands of miles to come and quell excessive road noise. Stopping is a stress-free affair, and this fairly light curb weight helps maneuverability! Turn key and ready to roll, this terrific and trusty Toyota is one hell of a value and a certified Japanese Classic.
