Exterior Overview
It’s hard to be practical and emotional at the same time when considering a new car purchase, but the Hilux Surf makes sense to own and is a blast to drive. For an SUV it’s sporty, and it’s also handsome. This 1996 is a classic-looking old-school ride, and is finished in a lovely Stellar Blue/Gray (8L7) two-tone. Aside from a few light dings, chips, and scuffs the paint is in good shape, and this SSR-X is adorned by OEM rainguards, 16″ Enkei alloys, a stylish spare tire swingarm, OEM bash bar, oversized fog lamps, and an optional factory rear spoiler. Fresh off a recent service this terrific Toyota is powered by a nearly bulletproof four-cylinder gasoline engine that was offered Stateside. Freshly serviced, this five-seater boasts a mere 129k verified and documented miles on the clock, which means its barely broken in. Safe and reliable, this 4×4 is perfect for year-round family use, adventurous types, and off-road die-hards. This affordable and cool rig does just about everything well. Determined, inexpensive to operate, and beloved by all, this Japanese Classic is our best seller!

Interior Overview
The cabin is in great shape overall and was cared for in Japan without a doubt. The interior plastics are in above-average shape and the dashboard lacks any cracking or fading. Dual SRS airbags are standard as are ABS brakes. The center stack is simple in its design and this Surf includes the optional automatic climate control system. The A/C works like a charm, as does the heat, and the OEM optional head unit below is in good nick. It sounds decent, too, and even has a slot for that old mini disk you’ve been saving for twenty years. The driver can find the ideal driving position thanks to an adjustable steering column and optional adjustable lumbar support. To make daily use more manageable, power windows, locks, and mirrors function in typical Toyota fashion. The Moon Mist-colored cloth seats are in good shape, too, and lack any major rips, stains, or tears. The middle row can split fold, 4-way recline, and fold flat into the floor depending on your cargo and passenger carrying needs. If a trip to the hardware store is in order, extra-long 2x4s stand little chance against the electric rear tailgate glass, which drops down to improve the ability to transport longer items. The headliner, door cards, and carpets have withstood the past 30 years without sustaining major abuse. That’s not to say the cabin is perfect as we wanted to note some wear on the center armrest, and the rear cupholder assembly is broken. Still, that’s a bit of nitpicking for a vehicle of this age, and we think the American owner will surely be impressed with the condition of the cockpit.

Mechanical Overview
These three-decade old rigs are still everywhere in 2025, which speaks to this Hilux’s staying power. A quick cruise about town will normally turn up several 4Runners of this vintage, albeit with many more miles typically logged than our Japanese versions. Toyota chose two engines for our domestic models, with this 3RZ-FE being the more frugal option. It also is a chain-driven unit, which means there is no costly belt replacement needed. Fresh off an oil and filter service, the 2.7L churns to life care of a new 12v battery. A set of new spark plugs were installed to properly combust the fuel and the electronics will stay properly powered with a set of new accessory belts. A new engine air filter allows the 2.7L to breathe freely and one of our trained techs has rehabbed the four-banger fixing a couple of pesky oil leaks. Starting out with a new valve cover gasket, we moved our way down and resealed the oil pump, and installed a new front main seal. The 3RZ pulls hard to redline and is linked to a stout automatic gearbox. The selectable transfer case can engage 4WD on the fly, and a low range is also on hand should an off-road escapade be in order. We refreshed the suspension heavily to give it a new lease on life. New front shocks smooth out the ride and we also replaced the front sway bar links, front lower control arms, and lower ball joints. The steering system was also repaired and we rebuilt the steering rack completely. New inner and outer tie rods were installed prior to a fresh alignment, and we took care of new front rack boots while we were in there. The ABS brakes feel tight and tidy and the Enkei wheels are wrapped in good Yokohama Geolandar rubber, which is knee-deep in tread. Turn key and ready to rock, this trusty steed can be yours today!
