The SUV market is much different than it was 25 years ago. The sturdy, body-on-frame workhorses that trudged America into the millennium have since been replaced by lifeless piles of technology, with Toyota's cultlike following keeping models like this 1998 Hilux Surf alive. Sporting a robust intercooled turbodiesel, selective 4WD, and fan-favorite looks, this Bamboo Pearl (6T1) Surf is worth writing home about. Set off by a facelift front bumper, an optional spare tire swingarm, and a factory rear wing this Surf looks great, drives even better, and has only a mere 95k miles to its name. The multipiece alloys steal the show and look great against the bespoke Lexus paint job to boot. Sure there's a few chips, spots of paint fade, and the rear bumper was replaced in Japan, but for a 25 year old truck it's remarkable how well it's held up over the decades. Don't call it a fluke, trucks like this KZN185 are the real deal, and a great example of a tried and true Japanese Classic!

Like the rest of the truck, the interior is durable, sturdy, and offers all the equipment you'd need to make daily driving a walk in the park. The seats are upholstered in durable tan cloth which have resisted any typical wear seen from daily use and abuse. Typically prone to UV distortion and peeling, the dash is in good condition overall and houses dual SRS airbags to keep your and your occupants safe when traversing at our higher US highway speeds. The center stack frames a Bluetooth-compatible Mitsubishi touch screen headunit and a simple to use digital automatic climate control system. Cold A/C and hot heat are available on demand and separate rear heat controls can be doled out to rear passengers in need. All four power windows work as advertised, as do the power locks and electric folding side mirrors. The switchgear is all at hand and easy to read, including the optional illuminated instrument cluster. Different from our USDM 4Runners, the Surf features a reclining rear bench which can come in handy for any sleepy passengers in the rear. An interior this nice is one in a million here in the states, and we've even retained the OEM carpet mats, owner's manuals, and maintenance booklets to protect your investment! Save for some wear to the steering wheel and touch points, there's nearly nothing to complain about!

This is a good looking truck no doubt, but the intercooled 1KZ-TE under the hood is where this chassis really shines! We installed two new 12v batteries to aid ignition and this turbodiesel is fresh off a comprehensive service done here at the shop. An oil and filter service was performed, and a new valve cover gasket buttons up any unwanted leaks of lubricant up top. A brand new radiator replaced an old worn-out unit, and a new engine air filter and diesel fuel filter keep this 3.0 running right as rain. The optional intercooler does a lot to increase performance and regulate EGT's on longer drives, and the automatic gearbox is nicely geared for longer highway excursions. 2WD maximizes fuel economy and power but selective 4WD is on standby when needed, with a locking center differential for when the going gets tough. Four brand new shocks soak up road imperfections large and small with nary a squeak or rattle, the steering is on point, and the ABS brakes clamp down hard when needed. We even wrapped the multipiece alloys in fresh Falken rubber, which not only looks good but should provide plenty of grip for tens of thousands of miles to come!
