With the new millennium shortly approaching, many car manufacturers were looking for inspiration in 1994. Futuristic styling, crazy technology, and loads of powered gimmicky features were being plopped into all sorts of JDM vehicles, but not this one. When Toyota dreamed up this platform in the early 1980s, these Prados flew off the shelves. So naturally, Toyota had no interest in ruining a good thing! Finished in a striking Tiger Eye hue over Black two-tone (YR594P), and set off by a spicy set of aftermarket alloys, this Prado is the real deal. Aside from some light dings and imperfections, the paint is in good shape and this rig is fresh off a recent service. Although the miles are unverified, the truck is in above average shape and was cared for in a prior life overseas. Reliable enough to be daily driven, and capable enough to be off-roaded, these practical and collectible Toyotas are versatile SUVs. Stylish, surefooted, and simple to service, this Prado SX is a Japanese Classic through and through.
The cabin is done in a simple yet ergonomic style. The view of the road ahead is clear and commanding as the driver sits far above traffic. The driver benefits from electric lumbar support and a tilt-adjustable steering wheel to find the ideal driving position. A Momo steering wheel adds a bit of class to the cabin as well as some contrast. Power windows, door locks, and electric side mirrors all function and make daily use more enjoyable. If you are worried about the summer heat next year, functional A/C is equipped as well. A Clarion audio upgrade modernizes the interior and supplements the turbodiesel soundtrack if you want to crank some tunes. The highlight of the cabin has to be the special blue textured cloth upholstery. It extends back to the optional third row and lacks any major rips, stains, or tears. It also is mirrored in the door cards which look decent. The carpets and headliner are in fair shape and overall it's clear this Land Cruiser was cared for in a prior life. That's not to say the cabin is perfect as we wanted to note a custom dash cover has been installed to cover up a chip in the dash the size of a business card. Otherwise, the condition is impressive overall.
The simple and sturdy body on frame platform is a good reason for the longevity these rigs can achieve. The powerplant is an absolute gem as well, the 1KZ-TE. The 3.0L churns to life care of two new 12v batteries and is fresh off an oil and filter service. To give the four-banger diesel a new lease on life, a bevy of preventative maintenance and repair services have been performed by our trained technicians. A new engine air filter and new fuel filter were taken care of, and a new fuel pump was installed, too. While it was up on the lift we installed a new valve cover and replaced the rear main seal. Lastly, we replaced the dried serpentine belts with new ones. The 1KZ is linked to a smooth shifting automatic transmission and selective transfercase. Low 4WD and electric hub locking is ideal for those planning an off-road excursion and the suspension feels good on or off the beaten path. New trailing arm bushings were installed prior to its successful state inspection and the wheels are wrapped in new 31" Falkens all around. The power steering is light yet on point and the brakes are plenty capable of slowing down this monster. Honest trucks are a dying breed in a market that's slowly becoming a cesspool of technology. Why not buy a rig that's been proven for decades?
