To this day, the Toyota Celsior remains a marvel of Japanese engineering and a remarkable value no matter which way you spin it. The same car that registered quieter cruising speeds than a Rolls Royce, and underwent 500 timing belt redesigns to reduce engine vibration is still widely available, and still a killer option to daily drive in the 21st century. Ours is finished in Ebony Teal Pearl (6N9) and this facelifted 1997 is set off by factory rainguards and two-tone body cladding. Showing a few small defects from daily use, the exterior is no worse for the wear and the 53k verified and documented miles on the clock do a lot to exemplify that statement. Comfortable, easy to operate, and a sound investment for years to come, this Celsior is the textbook definition of a true Japanese Classic.
With stout build quality you'd expect the interior to follow suit, but this Celsior's executive wool trimmings blow any and all expectations out of the water. The upholstery is more durable, comfortable, and less likely to fry your behind than our leather offerings stateside. Lacking any rips, stains or tears from daily use and abuse, it's clear this one was cared for in a prior life as well. Both forward passengers benefit from power adjustable seating, and the driver gains an electric tilt and telescoping steering column to dial in the perfect piloting position. For a bit of added safety behind the wheel, dual front and side SRS airbags are on hand alongside standard ABS brakes in the event of any unwarranted stops. A dual zone climate control unit helps dial in the cabin temperature with cold A/C and hot heat on standby, and an adjacent audio system pumps out your tunes at above average quality overall. All four automatic power windows work without a hitch, and the electric locks and power folding mirrors work too. The factory keyless entry is still functional, and we retained the OEM carpet mats and maintenance booklets for a true time capsule experience. It's hard to find a single thing this cockpit does wrong, and overall we really think it sells this executive saloon!
The 1UZ-FE is a fantastic motor in its own right, and it becomes nearly unstoppable when equipped with VVT-i and a killer 5 speed automatic gearbox. Ours is fresh off a recent service and cranks over with haste care of a new 12v battery. We took care of a new fuel filter and got the lubrication up to date after a fresh oil and filter service. With the maintenance performed this one jets up to speed in a jiffy and excels in cruising at highway speeds. To keep the ride comfortable for all, we replaced all four strut assemblies with new ones and also changed out the front lower ball joints on both sides. A fresh alignment dials in the handling and we mounted up fresh all-season rubber on all four corners. Comfortable, easy to maneuver, and grippy enough to stop on a dime, the new tires are a perfect mate for this luxurious chassis and should last for tens of thousands of miles to come!
