Exterior Overview
This is our first Dorado Gold (KG4) Hilux Surf. We are in love with the color, but this vehicle’s beauty is more than skin deep. This tough Toyota is underpinned by a robust 4WD system and features a peppy four-cylinder engine that was sold here in the US, so service is a snap. Fresh off a comprehensive service, this 2001 model has logged only 105k verified and documented miles on the clock. Adorned with some distinctive graphics, this SSR-X is set off by OEM rainguards, an OEM spare tire swingarm, rear spoiler, and a set of refinished factory 16″ wheels. Aside from a few minor dings, chips, and scuffs associated with normal wear and tear, this RZN185 is in good shape overall. A do-it-all type of SUV, these rigs make for fantastic family haulers, wicked weekend overlanders, and almost anything in between. Interior Overview
The cabin is simple, ergonomic, and nicely equipped. As a late-production Surf, the cockpit was revised to include a more modern digital climate control system, additional storage, and improved cup holder placement so you can limit spills and stains. Access inside is made seamless thanks to functional keyless entry. Pilots of all sizes can find the ideal seating position courtesy of a tilt-adjustable steering column and optional lumbar support. The seats are in above-average shape and are upholstered in a soft tan textured cloth. They lack any major rips, stains, or tears. The rear seats 4-way recline, split fold, and can tumble forward to create a flat loading floor when additional cargo must to be loaded. The front seats are comfortable, and those riding up front can rest assured knowing dual SRS airbags are standard. The center stack is within arm’s reach, and the OEM audio is easy to operate and sounds great. The A/C and heat work like a charm, too, although we wanted to note the rear heat lines have been removed and bypassed. Power folding mirrors, power locks, and electric side windows work, too, making daily use more enjoyable. Even the rear hatch glass powers down in case you need to lug around some lengthy 2x4s from Lowes. The headliner, door cards, and carpets are in good shape, and even the owner’s manuals, maintenance booklets, and rare OEM carpet mats are included with the purchase of this fine vehicle.
Mechanical Overview
This rough-and-tumble ladder chassis SUV is one tough cookie. The same can be said for the engine, the 3RZ-FE. Fresh off an oil and filter service, the 2.7L chugs to life instantly thanks to a new 12v battery. A new engine air filter and new muffler work together to maximize power, and the four-banger is linked to a stout automatic gearbox. It shifts properly, and the pilot can toggle between 2WD and 4WD on the fly. For low-traction scenarios, a center locker and low range can be utilized to keep momentum moving forward. When you need it to merge on the highway, the 3RZ makes enough power and can handle sustained high-speed cruising! To slow down, the ABS braking system has been bolstered with new front brake pads and rotors. The long wheelbase distributes road imperfections well, and one of our trained techs has completely overhauled the suspension system. This Surf received new shocks all around, and the front end was improved with new front lower ball joints and front lower control arms. Out back, the rear upper and lower control arms were removed and replaced with new ones. The front and rear sway bar links were also changed out while it was on the lift. The chassis was aligned to prolong the life of the brand-new 31″ Falken tires, and this truck tracks straight as an arrow. The power steering is direct for a truck and benefits from new inner and outer tie rods to make future alignments a breeze. With all this great maintenance performed, we only noted a minor seep from the rear main seal and valve cover. Otherwise, this sturdy and stalwart Toyota is ready to hit the open road!
