Exterior Overview
A freshly reconditioned JDM SUV is a wonderful thing. You get the confidence of purchasing a reliable, highly regarded model like this Hilux Surf, with the aesthetic appeal of a modern truck. Finished in Silver Moss (KR5), this 2000 RZN185 is fresh off a comprehensive recent service and has ticked over a scant 122k miles over the years. It’s also powered by a stout 3RZ-FE engine, which also sees use in our American ‘Yotas. Set off by OEM chrome mirror caps, an optional license plate garnish, an aftermarket bug deflector, Gandaor polished exhaust, and snazzy privacy tint, the truck’s aesthetic is far more exciting than most drab 90’s sport utilities, and the freshly refinished factory alloys shod in Falken all-terrains are equal parts fun and functional. The Hilux Surf is a vehicle for everyone. If you enjoy camping or fishing, it’s confident enough to get you out and off the beaten path. If you prefer commuting and running errands, it’s reliable and not too bad on fuel, either. Whichever way you spin it, it’s hard not to see trucks like these as Japanese Classics!
Interior Overview
The cabin design is simple, includes several power features, and was clearly well cared for by a previous Japanese owner. The dashboard lacks any cracking or fading and houses dual SRS airbags for some added peace of mind. Typical of these 3rd generation models, there is some minor distortion by the glovebox area. The center stack is close by and includes an upgraded digital automatic climate control system. It can produce cold A/C and piping hot heat with the best of them, and is simple to operate. The center stack was redesigned for these facelifted Surfs, yielding a number of upgrades including accessible, functional cupholders. Mounted centrally, a Pioneer touchscreen headunit comes pre-loaded with hip-hop, jazz, and everything in between. The driver benefits from adjustable lumbar support and a tilt-adjustable steering column to find the ideal driving position. Power windows, power back glass, electric locks, and mirrors all work in typical Toyota fashion making daily use enjoyable. Optional keyless entry also makes entering the vehicle a breeze. The seats are trimmed in a durable black and blue textured cloth. The Japan-exclusive upholstery lacks any major rips, stains, or tears, which is impressive given the vehicle’s vintage. The rear row can split fold, and can also tumble forward to create a flat loading floor. The carpets and headliner have resisted major abuse, and the interior plastics have survived without major blemishes, too. Aside from a noted non-operational power antenna, we think the driver will love being in the cockpit of this Surf. The inclusion of the original owner’s manual is a nice touch, too!
Mechanical Overview
The Hilux Surf rides on the same platform as our domestic 4Runners, so maintenance, repairs, and upgrades are readily available and can be had on the cheap. Power comes from the beloved 3RZ-FE, which was also sold here Stateside. The 2.7L springs to life courtesy of a new 12V battery and is fresh off an oil and filter service. A proper tune-up was in order, so we chucked in some spark plugs and a new engine air filter. So that the four-banger stays properly lubricated, one of our trained techs has given it a refresh, and fixed some pesky oil leaks. A new oil pump seal was installed, and we also took care of the oil filter housing gasket while we were in there. The 2.7L feels healthy as a horse and is mated to a stout automatic gearbox. It slots into gear with precision thanks to new shifter bushings and makes good use of the 3RZ’s powerband. The pilot can choose to send power to the rear axle or both, as 4WD can be engaged on the fly. Unlike many gasoline four-cylinder equipped Surfs, this one was spec’d with a desirable center locking differential. Paired with a low-range 4WD setting, this Hilux can go just about anywhere off the beaten path. On pavement it’s also comfortable, with its long wheelbase and predictable suspension. For some added peace of mind, we installed new front lower ball joints and front lower control arms. ABS is standard, and this midsize SUV slows down quickly when called upon. So that things stay that way, new front rotors and brake pads were installed. The power steering is light and easily maneuverable. We rebuilt the steering rack with new bushings and boots and then flushed the system. New inner and outer tie rods were then replaced so that we could dial in a proper alignment, as well. Lastly, we mounted and balanced four new 31″ Falken tires at each corner. The new rubber looks mean, quells road noise, and should last for tens of thousands of miles to come. Turn key and ready to rock, this special Surf ticks tons of boxes!
