Exterior Overview
This tank of a Land Cruiser left the factory in the year 2000, and despite being a quarter century old, it just now feels like it’s getting broken in. This turbodiesel dream is a luxury barge with some serious off-road capabilities. Reliable, capable, safe, and cool, it is our most modern SUV offering and spoils those within the cockpit with space and a bevy of luxury appointments. It is also handsome, with its 17″ ICON alloys, OEM rainguards, and subtle rear spoiler. Aside from a few light dings, chips, and scuffs, the White Pearl Mica (057) paint is in good shape, and this 4×4 is fresh off a recent service. Boasting only 85k verified and documented miles on the clock, this terrific Toyota is barely broken in. Ideal as a year-round family hauler, this rig gets killer MPG and is also a performance enthusiast’s dream with its never-ending supplies of torque. A Japanese Classic like this is at home on the beach, gliding down the interstate, and can get down and dirty with the best of them.
Interior Overview
The cabin is cavernous and has loads of space for people, pets, and cargo. It’s filled with premium materials and was clearly cared for in Japan. The driver benefits from a tilt-adjustable steering column and electric adjustable lumbar support. The dashboard lacks any cracking or fading, and dual SRS airbags are standard equipment. An Eclipse headunit modernizes the cabin and is linked to a rear DVD screen. It sounds decent and supplements the commute nicely. Below the radio are the controls for the automatic climate control system. Rear occupants have their own heating system, too. Piping hot heat and cold air conditioning can be adjusted and mixed to provide relief from the outside weather. If you prefer more natural ventilation, the side windows power down, the rear window glass pops outward, and a large moonroof can be retracted. Power folding mirrors and electric locks also work in typical Toyota fashion, which improves daily use. The tan cloth upholstery is soft to the touch and lacks any major rips, stains, or tears. The door cards, carpets, and headliner are in good nick, and aftermarket LED interior lights bring some panache to the cabin.
Mechanical Overview
Under the skin, this is a tough body on frame beast. With a full-time 4×4 system, a center locking differential, and tons of ground clearance, these trucks are nearly unstoppable. The same can be said for the engine, the 1HD-FTE. This 4.2L is fresh off an oil and filter service and turns over promptly care of two new 12V batteries. We added some new hood shocks so the bonnet stays up, and a new fuel filter and engine air filter were installed immediately as it got on the lift. The inline six runs without vibration and is linked to a stout automatic gearbox. Shifts feel confident, and power is sent to both axles. A low range can be engaged to keep momentum moving forward, and to slow down, standard ABS brakes do the trick. We heavily refreshed the suspension to give this wonderful platform a new lease on life. Four brand new shocks were installed to smooth out the ride, and we also replaced the rear upper control arms. A hub service was performed, too, and we completely rebuilt the power steering rack so that this big truck is easy to maneuver. New rack bushings and boots were taken care of, and to dial in the proper alignment, we replaced the inner and outer tie rods. The 17″ ICON wheels are wrapped in brand new 33″ Falken tires. These new tires reduce road noise, look mean, and will last for tens of thousands of miles to come.
