Exterior Overview
It’s a good indication that a model has some staying power if it’s in the middle of a forty one year production run. The 70 Series Land Cruiser is just such a vehicle, and this 1994 is a special example. Its angular styling is timeless, its spacious cabin is useful, and its mechanicals are nearly bulletproof. Finished in a lovely Dark Green Mica over Silver (24V) two-tone, this rig is set off by chrome mirror caps, chrome door handles, OEM rainguards, and some freshly powercoated 15″ silver alloys. Aside from a few light scuffs, dings, and chips, the paint is in fine shape, and this turbodiesel wonder is fresh off a recent service. Boasting a mere 134k verified and documented miles on the clock, this seven-seater is barely broken in. Ready for an adventurous family road trip off the beaten path, yet trustworthy enough to be daily driven, this terrific Toyota is nothing short of a Japanese Classic.
Interior Overview
The cabin is in better condition than the average 70 Series we see. This is evidenced by the lack of dashboard cracks which plague this model. It also boasts a few upgrades, one of the most convenient being the USDM BOSS radio we installed. It looks modern, sounds decent, and includes hand free Bluetooth capability to keep your eyes on the road ahead. The driver benefits from a tilt-adjustable steering column, and a bolster can be inflated or deflated to find the ideal driving position. Power locks, a power moonroof, electric mirrors, and power windows all work in typical Toyota fashion, making daily use more enjoyable. The climate system is simple to operate and includes piping hot heat and cold A/C so that this truck can be enjoyed year-round. Equipped with a desirable third row, which can be fully removed or stored against the D-Pillar, this Prado can seamlessly carry loads of folks and their gear. For a larger cargo capacity, the middle row can tumble and slide forward, too. The upholstery is in fine shape and lacks any major rips, stains, or tears. The same soft yet durable material can be found in the door cards, as well. The headliner is in good shape, and aside from some light carpet stains, it’s really hard to complain about the condition of the cockpit.
Mechanical Overview
A key to this model’s enduring legacy are the simple yet sturdy mechanicals. The ladder frame chassis can withstand loads of abuse, and the same can be said for the powerplant, the 1KZ-TE. A new 12V battery was installed so that the 3.0L would start on the first twist of the key, and we immediately performed an oil and filter service. We spruced up the four-banger with a new valve cover gasket, half moon seal, and new fuel and intake air filters. A new set of serpentine belts was installed, and to keep the electronics properly powered, we also replaced the old underperforming alternator with a new unit. The 3.0L feels strong as a bull, and it pulls hard to redline. Power is sent through a stout automatic gearbox to the rear wheels or all four, depending on the driver’s preference. The selectable transfercase also has a setting for low range should you need to take the path less travelled. The driveline was refreshed with new front axle seals, and we also resealed the rear differential. The front and rear pumpkins received new fluid, and the driveline is right as rain now. It can comfortably cruise at highway speeds and if you need to slow down, we have performed a brake fluid flush to keep the pedal feel tidy. The power steering is light and easy to articulate, and the suspension can handle the rigors or daily use and abuse. Grip is handled by four new 31″ Falken tires. The new rubber looks mean, but most importantly, will last for thens of thousands of miles to come. Turn key and ready to rock, this Land Cruiser would be a capable and unique daily driver or wicked weekend warrior!
