These Land Cruisers are doggone good daily drivers, balanced and refined, and did we mention the turbodiesel models see fuel economy superior to most midsize sedans?

Exterior Overview

Here at Japanese Classics, we are obsessed with the 100 series Land Cruiser for good reason. They are doggone good daily drivers, balanced, refined, and did we mention the turbodiesel models see fuel economy superior to most midsize sedans? That’s only half the appeal of this amazing chassis, and our 2000 VX Limited is a fine example of the platform. Finished in White Pearl (057) this luxury cruiser is set off by a factory rear spoiler, aftermarket fender flares, LED tail lamps, a color-matched grille, and brand new Method MR312 alloys. The cosmetics are in great shape overall, and are far superior to your average 25 year old truck here in the USA. Still, there are some minor rock chips and dings to be expected, and we wanted to note the rear hatch and front left fender were previously replaced in Japan. Best of all, the incredibly nice 69k verified miles on the clock are verified, documented, and as a whole, this example is primed and ready for an eager next owner. Combine Toyota’s best turbodiesel engine with their best full-sized SUV chassis, and you have an award-winning recipe for a certified Japanese Classic.

Interior Overview

The interior is in above average condition, and with a full slate of power niceties and upgrades, it’s evident the prior Japanese owner cared for this example. Factory leather upholstery is exceptionally rare in diesel models, yet ours hardly looks two decades old save for some minor stress cracks in the leather. It’s set off nicely by a woodgrain steering wheel and accent trim on the dash, which also houses dual SRS airbags for the safety conscious. Both driver and passenger benefit from power adjustable heated seats, and an electric tilt/telescoping column is easy to adjust on the fly to accommodate other drivers. The center stack is also luxurious in design, thanks to an expensive Kenwood touchscreen headunit upgrade, complete with Bluetooth functionality. Adjacent to the audio, automatic climate control keeps the cabin supplied with cold air conditioning, and hot heat to both forward and rear passengers. The rear seating is spacious, and it also reclines if your passengers need to catch a quick snooze. Up front, the driver can command power windows, locks, and power folding side mirrors to make daily driving easier. There’s even an expansive power moonroof that opens up to fill the cabin with natural airflow. The headliner surrounding it is clean, and the carpets below have been protected by OEM mats. Save for a nick in the rear seatback, there’s not much to complain about, as this cabin has been clearly loved and maintained for the better half of 25 years.

Mechanical Overview

The 1HD-FTE under the hood is worth it’s weight in gold to seasoned enthusiasts, and is one of the most refined diesels we’ve experienced. We’ve given this terrific turbodiesel a fresh service, starting with 2 new 12V batteries that help the 4.2L crank over in a cinch. From there, we tended to a basic service, with a new engine air filter, fuel filter, and a fresh oil and filter change. The 1HD purrs through a larger catback exhaust, and getting up to highway speeds is a stress-free affair. With the radio cranked, you’d hardly know it was a diesel, as the powerband is more akin to a smooth-revving V8. The factory height adjustable suspension works like a charm and can be adjusted on the fly to gain a couple inches of ground clearance. It benefits from new rear upper and lower control arms, panhard bar bushings, and new rear swaybar links that gave this one the green light at state inspection. The power steering rack was also rebuilt up on our lift with new seals and new steering rack bushings. We threw it back together with new inner and outer tie rods, perfomed a power steering flush, and the wheels turn with ease. The ABS brakes stop on a dime, and the rear pads and rotors were replaced to keep stopping distances short. The Method wheels were wrapped in brand new 33″ Falken tires. The new all-terrain rubber looks the part, and should last for tens of thousands of miles to come thanks to a fresh alignment. This low-mileage turn key SUV would make a fantastic daily driver, and is miles above any comparable USDM 100 series!
