Exterior Overview
Dollar for dollar, the J95 Prado has a lot more value than similar trucks, and it may as well be Toyota’s best kept SUV secret. Our 1996 checks nearly all the boxes that discerning drivers want. Torquey turbodiesel power, comfortable driving dynamics, and a third row, all backed by legendary Toyota reliability! This Prado TX is easy on the eyes as well, and is finished in Desert Dune Metallic/Silver (1A5). An optional front brushguard, OEM rainguards, and refinished factory alloys round off the aesthetic and save for some paint chips and loss of gloss the vehicle shows well aesthetically. With an impressive 84k miles on the ticker, this trusty ‘Yota is barely broken in and is also fresh off a recent service here in-house. As a bonafide adventure mobile or a reliable daily hauler, the J95 Prado is one of the most versatile Japanese Classics we sell!
Interior Overview
A sharp contrast from the 70 series that preceded it, this 96’s interior is flush with power appointments, durable materials, and is logically laid out for drivers and passengers to easily navigate. It’s also in above average shape and would give most trucks from the past decade a run for their money. The cabin’s eight seat capacity is a highlight, and the grey cloth upholstery ties in nicely to the interior aesthetic and has also resisted any serious wear and tear over the years. The dash houses dual SRS airbags, and save for a rewrapped steering wheel it’s hard to scrutinize the interior materials overall. The center stack houses a simple Kenwood headunit. The audio quality is above average overall and Bluetooth functionality is on standby for your own tunes. An adjacent automatic climate control system has cold A/C and hot heat on standby, and a factory field monitor is mounted atop the center stack to assist aspiring overlanders. A large power moonroof is in good working order if you’re a fan of natural ventilation, and the power windows, locks, and electric folding side mirrors work like a charm, to assist daily use. For added cargo capacity, the 3rd row can stow aside the D-pillars, and the middle bench also tumbles forward to maximize available space in the rear. The 90 series is a durable truck, but the interior doesn’t leave a lot to be desired in terms of quality. It’s a breath of fresh air compared to the technology laden rigs of today, and is easy to live with overall.
Mechanical Overview
Under the skin, the drivetrain of this rig is what really counts. Toyota’s 1KZ-TE is stout, easy to own and maintain, and can stretch a tank far further than typical gas guzzling SUV’s. Ours is fresh off a recent service and springs to life care of a new 12v battery. We did a ton of valuable maintenance on this 3.0, installing new serpentine belts to drive your accessories, and polishing things off with a fresh oil and filter service. The engine air filter and fuel filter were replaced and this peppy four banger gets up to speed without issue. The turbo provides a sufficient nudge down low, and the automatic box shifts smoothly and is well geared for highway stints. Full time 4WD is always engaged, and a standard center locker and low range can pay dividends on a dedicated off road excursion. To shore up the drivetrain, a new transfercase output seal was installed too. We didn’t just stop at the engine, we also rehabbed the suspension. and new rear shocks keep your passengers from being jostled about in the back. We also installed new front swaybar links, and bolstered the ABS brakes with new pads and rotors up front. We freshly aligned the rig after wrapping the alloys in fresh Falken rubber. This truck looks good, handles great, and the new tires should provide tens of thousands of miles of reliable grip to come!
