Exterior Overview
The Land Cruiser is a tried and true platform, and exceptionally capable in stock form. For those who want something that really stands out, we have an example that’s been turned up to 11. Our 1998 HDJ101 is a turbodiesel-equipped example, and this Cruiser can really walk the walk! Finished in a one-off matte Supernova Gray, the cosmetics are stunning, and this lavish Landy is set off by a body lift, LED tail lamps, aftermarket fender flares, and 20″ ION wheels. We wanted to note that the rear frame was tucked and modified in Japan, for cosmetic reasons, which gives this truck a much better aesthetic. The condition of this rig is outstanding, and the 121k verified and documented miles on the clock do a lot to help this SUV retain its value. With an aesthetic that begs to be taken off-pavement, this luxury Land Cruiser would also feel right at home being a daily commuter for the eccentric enthusiast. It’s well designed, easy to service, and looks dang good. In other words, it’s a bonafide Japanese Classic!
Interior Overview
Toyota didn’t cut any corners with this chassis, and the top-notch build quality extends into the cockpit. Some might say it’s a bit overbuilt, as materials are plush and luxurious, and hardly any wind noise penetrates the cabin when sailing down the highway. The seats are upholstered in a durable tan cloth. Soft to the touch, the fabric was clearly well cared for in a prior life, and shows no major rips, stains, or tears. The driver’s bolster is slightly flattened, which is to be expected. Also in good shape is the dash cover, finished in a complementary tan vinyl. The dashboard features a modern design, and dual SRS airbags are present up front for the safety conscious. The command center is easily accessible and features controls for automatic climate adjustment. Cold A/C and hot heat are on standby, and an adjacent Kenwood audio upgrade can pump in some tunes with Bluetooth capability. Power windows, locks, and electric folding mirrors work like a charm, and there’s even a curtain rod that wraps around the cabin should you choose to spend a night off the grid. The middle bench is versatile, it can recline flat if you need to catch a snooze, and fold forward to maximize cargo space in the rear. The headliner is tidy, as are the carpets, and save for some wear beneath the steering wheel cover and a non-functional moonroof, we think most enthusiasts will go nuts for this Cruiser’s condition.
Mechanical Overview
Under the hood, the drivetrain is as good as gold. The 1HD-FTE is one of the most refined diesels we’ve experienced, and this super SUV was optioned with a rare rear locking differential, which is sure to please passionate off-roaders. We’ve given this terrific turbodiesel a fresh service, starting with 2 new 12V batteries that help the 4.2L crank over in a cinch. From there, we tended to a basic service, with a new engine air filter, fuel filter, and a fresh oil and filter change. The coolant was flushed and refilled with all new juice, and we installed a brand new aluminum radiator to keep temperatures in check. A new valve cover gasket was installed, and with the maintenance performed it was ripe and ready to tackle its first road test. Power and torque are abundant, and we resealed the transmission pan to keep fluid internal. For being lifted to high heaven, the suspension still feels comfortable and compliant, and features factory hydraulic adjustment to gain a couple of inches. It benefits from new rear upper and lower control arms, and we performed a fresh four-wheel alignment to make sure you track straight. The power steering is also surprisingly light and easy to maneuver, and the ABS brakes do a swell job at stopping this behemoth. To get this monster truck ready to tackle Moab, we installed new 37″ tires on all four corners of this cruiser. The new all-terrain rubber looks the part, and should last for tens of thousands of miles to come. This jaw-dropping SUV is the only one like it we’ve seen. It’s turnkey, and practically begging to be driven!
