Exterior Overview
The Hilux Surf is a nearly bulletproof truck, and has a reputation for dogged determination that stretches around the globe. This combination of a Toyota turbodiesel, a sure-footed 4WD system, and handsome styling all combine to make one heck of a midsize SUV. This 1998 is finished in a rare color, a Natural White over Gray (056) two-tone. Aside from a few light dings, chips, and scuffs, the paint is in good shape, and this rig is set off by OEM rainguards, a desirable OEM spare tire swingarm, an OEM rear spoiler with an integrated drop-down reverse mirror, stylish WEDS Keeler alloys, and some aggressive privacy tint. Fresh off a recent service, this safe and capable 4×4 is offered with only 132k verified and documented miles on the clock. Reliable, powerful, and frugal on fuel, it’s hard to nitpick this SSR-X model. For those who want a daily driver that can overland with the best of them, look no further than this stellar Japanese Classic.

Interior Overview
The cabin design is ergonomic, simple, and includes several electric options. Access is made more seamless thanks to functional OEM keyless entry, and a spare key is also included with the purchase. Other upgrades include an Eclipse touchscreen audio system, which sounds great and can enhance your morning commute. The dashboard is in good shape and lacks any cracking or distortion. Both front occupants benefit from front SRS airbags, and the driver can find the ideal seating position courtesy of an adjustable steering column and adjustable lumbar support. Rear occupants benefit from a 4-way adjustable rear seat back. The automatic climate controls are easy to reach and operate, and the A/C blows ice cold, while the heat blows hot! The seats and door cards utilize a dark confetti cloth, which is durable. The seats lack any major rips, stains, or tears and are in good nick, and the door cards have resisted major abuse over the past 28 years. Power folding mirrors, electric windows, and power locks all work in typically Toyota fashion, making daily use more enjoyable. The rear glass powers down to supplement airflow, and an optional rear-view mirror drops down from the spoiler with a press of the button. The cargo area is in good shape, and the OEM security cover was retained from the Japanese seller, and is included with the purchase of this truck.

Mechanical Overview
This body-on-frame SUV is a tough cookie, and the same can be said for the engine, the 1KZ-TE. This intercooled iteration makes 20 more ponies than the non-chilled version. and runs lower exhaust gas temps, too. Fresh off an oil and filter service, the 3.0L chugs to life promptly, care of two new 12v batteries. A proper tune-up was in order, and we supplied the Surf with a new engine air filter, a new fuel filter, and a fresh set of accessory belts. We took care of a couple of oil leaks to keep the 1K running tip-top. The valve cover gasket was replaced, and we also replaced the half-moon seal while we were in there. The driveline was further solidified with new rear wheel bearings. It’s a torquey four-banger and is linked to a stout automatic that makes good use of the powerband. The pilot can switch between 2WD and 4WD on the fly, and a center locker is on hand, as is a low range gearset should you encounter some loose road surfaces. It gets up to highway speeds quickly and can slow down impressively, and ABS is standard for those who might be safety-conscious. To keep stopping distances short, we installed new front calipers, brake lines, rotors, and pads. After that, we fully flushed the system. It handles well for a truck, too, and one of our trained techs overhauled the suspension and steering system. New front shocks, rear upper and lower control arms, and new front sway bar links were all replaced. The power steering rack was completely rebuilt, and new rack bushings were chucked in. Also, new inner and outer tie rods were fashioned so we could execute an alignment. The WEDS alloys are wrapped in brand-new 31″ Falken rubber. The new all terrains reduce road noise, look mean, and will last for tens of thousands of miles to come.
