Exterior Overview
The R33 Skyline has always suffered from a bit of middle child syndrome. Sandwiched in between the “Godzilla” R32 and big-screen icon R34, it never seemed to get the shine it deserved. We recognize the R33 as being a performance powerhouse and a well crafted machine that won’t break the bank, like its younger sibling. This 1996 is an above-average example too, finished in Platinum Silver Metallic (KL0) and set off by an optional aero front bumper, optional factory side skirts, and IMPUL NS-GTII wheels. The cosmetics look dang good for being close to 30 years old, and save for a noted replacement of the rear bumper in Japan, the condition impresses overall. It also boasts a remarkable 14k verified and documented miles on the clock, and one verified owner from its time in the motherland! This special sports coupe is fresh off a recent service, and turn-key ready to roll. With an abundance of parts available to modify and maintain, these Japanese Classics are cherished and make for phenomenal drivers!
Interior Overview
Cabin size is consistently a limiting factor, when it comes to choosing a Japanese import for our larger American frames. Nissan engineers pulled out all the stops for the R33 however, and this model has been known to accommodate taller drivers with ease. This example was clearly cared for in a prior life too, and it sports a fashionable grey cloth upholstery that’s still soft to the touch. The driver’s bucket was swapped for a period-correct Recaro SR2, which helps keep the pilot planted in the twisties. The dash cover has also resisted wear and tear, and the sculpted design seamlessly houses digital automatic climate controls, and OEM audio. These power amenities work well, with the former doling out cold A/C and hot heat on command. A driver SRS airbag is handy and a welcome sight on any classic sport coupe. If you want to let in a fresh breeze and listen to the RB’s intoxicating exhaust note, both power windows drop down with haste. Power locks and electronic folding side mirrors are also on hand to make daily use unencumbered. The back seat is one of the more spacious units we’ve seen in a Japanese-market coupe, and the remaining interior materials show well, from the cloth inserts in the door cards, to the headliner and carpets beneath. To keep dust and dirt at bay, factory optional carpet mats are included and look great against the grey upholstery. That’s not to say the cabin is perfect, as the HKS boost gauge no longer reads. Overall, we think the condition will more than make up for it, and we included the original owner’s manual and maintenance booklet for good measure!
Mechanical Overview
The RB25DET under the bonnet is beloved for many reasons, but for a Japanese-market engine we’re consistently surprised at how easy it is to maintain and modify here stateside. Our technicians have taken care of the initial service, so you can get right to the fun stuff! It springs to life, care of a new 12v battery mounted in the rear. The engine air filter and fuel filter were replaced for good measure, and the whole shebang sounds incredible, thanks to a Fujitsubo turbo-back exhaust. Power is responsive, and midrange torque is abundant. A five speed manual gearbox is fresh off a fluid flush, and everything is thrown straight to the rear wheels. The factory suspension helps insulate the chassis against larger road imperfections, and doesn’t feel a day over 29! The power steering is light and on point, and the IMPUL wheels are wrapped in good Bridgestone Potenza RE71-R rubber. This high performance rubber keeps you glued to the tarmac, and gives this R33 a race-inspired aesthetic that can’t be beat! We even freshly aligned this R33. A true time capsule Skyline like this is a rare find, and discerning enthusiasts should jump at the opportunity.
