Exterior Overview
The S15 was the perfect performance coupe to propel Nissan into the new millennium. It felt decidedly modern over its predecessors, was packed with loads of useful power equipment, and featured the same hair raising performance that made the chassis an obvious pick in motorsports and backroad spirited driving. Our 1999 Spec S is a one-owner example that boasts a few choice factory upgrades and is finished in a sleek coat of Black Pearl (KH3). Set off by optional aero side skirts, rear spats, and a prominent aero rear wing, this naturally aspirated S15 is in above average shape cosmetically, save for some light chips and dings typical of most 25 year old vehicles. Rounding off the aesthetic, OEM rainguards and 18″ six spoke Enkei T2 alloy wheels look snazzy against the black paintwork, and this Spec S is fresh off a recent service, touting only 74k verified miles from new. A perfect canvas for modification, or a phenomenal daily driver for those looking to keep it stock, we can’t say enough good things about this Japanese Classic champion!
Interior Overview
The interior was a major step up from the S14 and S13, which had finalized production the year before. Nissan ditched the dated 90’s cloth in favor of durable sport mesh upholstery, and the dash was redesigned with more futuristic styling cues. Dual SRS airbags were also made standard, and the driver gained a thicker and more ergonomic steering wheel to aid comfort. This S15 features functioning automatic climate control, with cold A/C and hot heat on tap for year round cruising, and a Pioneer headunit which pumps in AM/FM tunes on command. Standard fare for ’99, power windows, locks, and electric folding side mirrors work like a charm, in typical Nissan fashion. The black headliner adds an air of sophistication to the cockpit, and the carpets are protected by some snazzy OEM mats. The owner’s manual and maintenance booklets were retained by the prior owner, as was the factory spare that sits below the trunk cover. Save for some steering wheel wear and a missing SD card for the radio, this is a cabin that rewards both pilots and passengers!
Mechanical Overview
Under the bonnet, the SR20DE is a stout unit and was offered for sale in a few domestic Nissans, making parts and servicing a snap! Chain driven and fresh off a recent service, it springs to life care of a new 12v battery and one of our trained technicians performed an oil and filter service to get it on track for the road ahead. New serpentine belts were also installed, and this SR now runs right as rain and can handle higher demand driving here in the US. An automatic gearbox makes this an ideal S15 for daily use, and new rear struts help the suspension stay planted in tighter backroad twists and turns. New front caster arms were also installed, and a fresh alignment was performed so the power steering tracks straight as an arrow. New tires are mounted and balanced on all four corners to increase traction, and the ABS system works in tandem with the new rubber to maximize stopping power. Save for a minor seepage from the valve cover, this S15 is mechanically sound and a great buy on a collectible Japanese Classic!
