Exterior Overview
The Surf is a versatile SUV, offering abundant power, interior features, a performance-oriented 4WD powertrain, and handsome looks in one svelte package. This 1998 is set off by an OEM optional front valance, OEM rear wing, factory rainguards, OEM rear spare tire swingarm, rear privacy tint, and OEM 16″ alloys. Aside from a few light chips, dings, and scuffs, the Millennium Silver Metallic (K73) paint is in good nick, and we wanted to note the hatch was replaced at some point in Japan. Fresh off a recent service, this intercooled model boasts only 125k verified and documented miles on the clock, and it feels fresh as a daisy. Ideal as a year-round daily driver, cool campsite cruiser, or wonderful weekend warrior, this KZN185 is a Japanese Classic through and through.
Interior Overview
This example has an above-average interior and was obviously cared for overseas. In fact, It might be the nicest cabin we have seen all year! The tan interior trim is a rare option and the interior feels a bit larger than examples equipped with the darker plastics and headliners. The dashboard is in great shape and lacks any cracking or distortion. Dual SRS airbags are on hand for those who value safety and ABS brakes are standard too. The driver benefits from a tilt-adjustable steering column and optional adjustable lumbar support. The redesigned cupholders are a godsend, too, keeping coffee off your khakis! The center stack includes a simple-to-use digital automatic climate control system. The heat functions, keeping the cabin toasty all winter and A/C is primed for next year’s summer. Below the factory TV radio pipes in some tunes to supplement your commute. Power windows, power locks, and power mirrors all work in typical Toyota fashion, improving daily driving. Even the rear glass powers down, to add some ventilation for your furry friends. The upholstery is top-tier and lacks any major, rips, stains, or tears. The rear row can split fold or tumble forward to create more room for your gear. The matching material can be found in the door cards which are in equally good nick. The headliner and carpets have withstood the past 25 years without sustaining major abuse and it looks like the cargo area has hardly been used. Even the owner’s manuals, maintenance booklets, and carpet mats are included with the purchase of this lovely Toyota.
Mechanical Overview
Body on frame, this platform is a tough one! The same can be said for the 1KZ-TE, which is a legendary engine. This version is intercooled, which adds around 20 ponies and runs lower exhaust gas temperatures than the non-intercooled variants. Fresh off an oil and filter service, the 3.0L chugs to life care of a new 12v battery. A new engine air filter and fuel filter were installed immediately, and this 1K runs tip-top! It’s linked to a smooth shifting automatic and a selectable transfercase. The pilot can choose between 2WD or 4WD on the fly and for low traction scenarios, a low range and center locker are on hand. Acceleration is impressive, but that’s no surprise to us and the 1KZ is known for its low end grunt. It slows down nicely and ABS makes quick work of snowy road conditions. The power steering is direct and the suspension feels predictable and can handle small and large potholes alike with confidence. New rear sway bar links were installed so that this Surf would easily pass its Virginia police safety inspection with flying colors. Lastly, the 16″ wheels are wrapped in brand new 31″ Falken all-terrain tires. They look mean, quell road noise, and will last for tens of thousands of miles to come.
