Exterior Overview
The KZN185 Surf is a real enthusiast’s truck. That’s not to say it doesn’t appeal to commonfolk, but smart buyers recognize the benefits of purchasing a diesel Toyota 4×4. Our 1997 checks all the boxes, and is finished in a fresh coat of Cavalry Blue. It’s also traveled a mere 101k verified and documented miles, which is barely broken in as far as diesels and Toyota trucks are concerned. The cosmetics are snazzy, and jazzed up by OEM roof rack crossbars, an OEM swing-out spare tire arm, and 16″ refinished alloys. Save for a few minor paint imperfections and blemishes, the truck is a stunner overall and should turn plenty of heads to those in the know. Ideal for a weekend trip to the trails, but frugal to operate throughout your weekly commute, these Surf’s are capable, reliable, and tough as nails. It’s our best seller for a reason, and this SSR-X is a standout Japanese Classic!
Interior Overview
The interior is an often overlooked part of these trucks, which is a shame because Japanese Market examples have typically fared much better than our domestic examples. This cabin is no exception, and the Moon Mist cloth upholstery is in excellent shape overall. The dash materials are also in good shape and have resisted any typical UV distortion or fading typically seen on these models, although we wanted to note some discoloration from a prior accessory removal. The 3rd generation Surf is bolstered with tons of good power equipment, including power windows and locks all the way around, and side mirrors that electronically fold if you need to squeeze into a tight spot. Unique to the Surf platform here at the dealership, the rear window also unfurls with the push of a button if you prefer natural ventilation. To regulate the temperature of the cabin, automatic climate control is easy to use, and doles out cold A/C and hot heat at the push of a button. OEM audio is also on hand, and located conveniently in the center stack. Dual SRS airbags are standard equipment up front, and safety-conscious passengers should breathe easy knowing the N185 includes additional side impact support in the doors. The rear bench is plenty spacious for squeezing in additional occupants. They recline slightly to maximize comfort and can fold fully flat to expand the cargo hold in the rear. The headliner is tidy, and included with the purchase are a set of desirable factory rubber floor liners. They’ll keep your carpets tidy, which is important as this truck was clearly cared for in a prior life!
Mechanical Overview
The 1KZ-TE under the hood is a stout unit, and one of our favorite powerplants to own and maintain here at the dealership. To shore this one up for the road ahead, one of our trained technicians performed a comprehensive recent service, and this super Surf runs like a top! To start, 2 new 12v batteries were installed on this cold weather package truck to aid ignition, and a fresh oil and filter service was performed to help the 3.0 chug along smoothly at idle. A valve cover gasket was installed to keep the engine compartment free of leaks, and we flushed out some old coolant with brand-new juice. We also changed out the fuel filter to keep the 1K clean and free of unwanted contaminants. After that basic tune up, it was ready to pound some pavement, and with the maintenance performed the turbodiesel roars up to highway speeds with ease. Shifts are handled by a durable automatic gearbox, which sends power through a selective transfercase, which benefits from a new output seal to keep lubricant internal. For true off-roaders, a center locking differential is on hand, and you can even slip into 4WD low to trudge through a blizzard. Bolstering the suspension, we installed new front swaybar links to pass state safety inspection, and this lovely Surf starts, steers, and stops on a dime. Handsome on the tarmac and functional off it, brand new Falken A/T tires were mounted on the multipiece 16’s to keep you full of traction for the road ahead. After a fresh alignment, she drives like a million bucks and is ready to tackle whatever, whenever!
