Exterior Overview
We’re just about 25 years away from the year 2000, and the landscape of vehicles we offer is changing right before our eyes. Although we sell Japanese Classics, trucks like this 1999 Pajero Exceed feel decidedly modern, with a unibody construction and plenty of equipment. There is one huge difference, as the 3.2l turbodiesel drivetrain was never offered here and serves up gobs of torque and efficiency. Cosmetically, this Satellite Silver (A69) Pajero is in above average shape, and is set off by factory wide bodywork, OEM rainguards, and 16″ WEDS Keeler alloys. Save for some light paint defects, scuffs, and dings, the cosmetics are no worse for the wear overall. The 106k miles on the ticker are also verified and documented, which is barely broken in for these bulletproof turbodiesels. Ideal for daily use, the Pajero would make for an excellent daily driver or weekend trail hauler, thanks to responsive super select 4WD. Chock full of equipment, this third generation truck is truly special!
Interior Overview
The interior is comfortable and far more spacious than the previous Pajero generation we still retail. It also received a complete styling overhaul, including a redesigned third row, and a centrally mounted command center for your audio and HVAC. Easy to operate, it doles out cold A/C and hot heat upon request, and the audio controls are intuitive although currently the audio only works with AM frequencies. Fortunately, an aftermarket unit is a simple upgrade if you get tired of talk radio. Safety is prioritized, with dual SRS airbags up front and plenty of crash support in the chassis too. The driver also benefits from a tilt adjustable steering column, which holds an optional woodgrain steering wheel to give the cabin an air of sophistication. Daily use is easy, thanks to a full slate of power windows, door locks, and mirrors, which electronically fold if you need to squeeze in a tighter parking spot. A highlight of this Pajero’s cabin, the third row seating uses a stow and go design, which allows you to easily drop the bench below deck if you need to maximize cargo space. This also allows you to recline the middle seats nearly 90 degrees, if you need to hop in the back and catch a quick snooze. The headliner is tight and tidy, and the carpets are protected by a set of OEM mats. This cabin doesn’t look a day over 25, and the grey cloth seats have resisted every day use and abuse as well. To protect your investment, we even held on to a full slate of owner’s manuals and maintenance booklets, documenting the history of this lovely Pajero!
Mechanical Overview
Our first true unibody SUV offering, we’re pleasantly surprised at how this Pajero can hang with the body on frame big dogs, both on and off pavement. Our trained technicians have also given this one a recent service and the green light for the road ahead. Power is doled out via a punchy 4M41 3.2l turbodiesel, which cranks over with haste in true Mitsu fashion care of 2 12v batteries. Under the hood, we installed a new engine air filter and fuel filter, and performed an oil and filter service to keep this diesel chugging along reliably. We also flushed out some old coolant to maintain proper thermal management, especially as we trudge through the chilly winter here in Virginia. This V78 is no slouch and jets up to highway speeds with ease, and a sportshift automatic commands gear changes. For trips off the beaten path, Super Select 4WD is on hand and easy to plop into 4WD, with a center locker and low gearing close behind if the going really gets rough. The suspension is planted, if not a bit soft, and the power steering is on point although we wanted to note a minor seep from the rack. To get you ready for the road ahead, we performed a fresh four wheel alignment, and this Pajero tracks straight. Durable, determined, and a great family chariot, the third generation Pajero has exceeded our expectations so far!
