Exterior Overview
Tough and unique, the 90 series two-door is for the true Toyota enthusiast. Short overhangs, a durable intercooled turbo diesel powerplant, and full-time center locked 4WD make for serious capability off the beaten path. This 1996 is a striking rig, finished in a fresh coat of Intense Blue (8N8) paint, and is adorned by some subtle OEM rainguards. OEM fog lamps and a massive Ironman 2″ full lift with wide 16″ alloys further complement the aesthetic and this KZJ90 is fresh off a recent service in our shop which included a new timing belt and water pump service. Offered with a mere 106k verified and documented miles on the clock, this Land Cruiser has plenty of life left in it. Our RX model also has a softer side, that features a plush ride and a safe and spacious cabin that includes a few spicy upgrades and some decent power amenities. Perfect as a hardcore enthusiast playtoy, cool kid hauler, or year-round daily driver, this Japanese Classic can do it all.
Interior Overview
The cabin is in good shape and was cared for overseas. The highlight has to be the gray Recaro adjustable sport seats. They are in above-average shape and lack any major rips, stains, or tears. The rear bench and door cards are upholstered in a blue and gray textured cloth. The material lacks any major imperfections and breaks up the dark interior plastics. The driver benefits from a tilt-adjustable steering column to find the ideal driving position. Power Mirrors, power locks, and power windows all work in typical Toyota fashion which make daily use more enjoyable. The dashboard houses dual SRS Airbags for added peace of mind and lacks any cracking or fading. The digital climate system is intuitive to use and blows cold A/C and piping hot heat. We replaced the old A/C condenser with a new one, so next summer remains pleasant. The rear cargo area is in good shape and the side-hinged door opens wide to gobble up cargo. The rear seats can be folded flat or hung up on the D-pillar for when additional space is needed. The headliner, door cards, and carpets are in good nick and as a whole, it’s hard to critique the cabin overall.
Mechanical Overview
Built to withstand torture testing, this chassis and engine are mated perfectly for this design. The intercooled 1KZ-TE is a beast of an engine and is fresh off a comprehensive service in our shop. The most expensive preventative maintenance item was taken care of first and foremost. A new timing belt and water pump were installed which will be good for another ten years or 100k kilometers. The 3.0L springs to life care of a new 12v battery. All of our diesel-powered vehicles immediately have the fuel filter swapped out for a new unit and we also performed an oil and filter service. A new engine air filter works to maximize MPG and thermal management is handled with a new aluminum radiator filled with fresh coolant. The four-banger is linked to a stout automatic gearbox that works well to maximize the 1K low-end grunt. It shifts properly and is linked to a FullTime 4WD transfercase. One of our trained techs has replaced the transmission cooler and replaced the transfercase front output seal for good measure. A fluid service was performed on the T-Case before it was removed for our lift. For trips to the trailhead or beach, a low range can be engaged as can a center locker to keep momentum moving forward. The suspension was a point of emphasis when we got to set this rig up. New front and rear Ironman shocks, rear upper and lower control arms, upgraded front axles, and new front lower control arms were all installed. Extended sway bar links complete the overhaul and this beast rides surprisingly well over the tarmac. The ABS brakes feel confident slowing this tall Toyota down, and new front pads and rotors reduce stopping distances. The power steering pump was rebuilt and assists articulation making parking a snap. New 35″ Falken All Terrain tires have been mounted and balanced over the refinished 16″ black alloys. The new rubber matches the all-business look, is freshly aligned, and most importantly will provide tens of thousands of miles of grip for years to come.
