Exterior Overview
It’s no secret at this point, the S15 Silvia is a hot commodity. Enthusiasts lusted after the chassis for decades, and now clean, fully legal examples are ripe for the picking, like this well-modified 1999 Spec R! Finished in Super Red (AJ4), and packed to the gills with top-of-the-line equipment, this S15 turns plenty of heads thanks to LED tail lamps, an FRP front and rear bumper, BN Sports side skirts, and 18″ ZSS wheels. Typical of 25 year old vehicles with aftermarket aero, there are a few minor paint defects present, but that does little to take away from the visual appeal of this Silvia as a whole. Better yet, the 116k miles on the clock are verified and documented and the SR20DET runs like a top. The S15 Silvia is the true definition of a Japanese Classic. It’s fun to drive, impressive on tarmac, and takes exceptionally well to modification. This stellar example can also be yours today!
Interior Overview
The interior follows suit; it’s in good shape and is bolstered with a few modifications to make performance driving a bit more fluid. This Spec R touts an exclusive black headliner, and sport mesh upholstery, which has resisted any excessive wear and tear over the years. The driver’s seat was swapped out for a Bride Lowmax unit, and a Nardi steering wheel improves dexterity in the palms of your hands. For safety-conscious occupants, a passenger SRS airbag is still on hand and tucks nicely into the futuristic black vinyl dash. Power windows, power door locks, and power folding mirrors all function, making daily use enjoyable. A digital automatic climate control display funnels cold A/C and hot heat throughout directional vents, where a couple of slots have been occupied by Blitz oil temperature and pressure gauges. Adjacent to the HVAC, Pioneer audio is on hand and sounds nice, should you prefer your own soundtrack over the turbo SR’s. The back seat folds down to expand the cargo hold in the rear, and aside from a missing dome light cover and some minor scuffs on the door cards there’s little to scrutinize overall.
Mechanical Overview
The SR20DET under the bonnet is a fan favorite platform that’s easy to service and fun to modify. This S15 boasts a few choice performance upgrades under the hood, and we’ve performed loads of good service and even some preventative maintenance to deliver a true turn-key experience on this red sled! For starters, we performed an oil and filter service, which should be easy for the next owner to keep up with as the oil filter has been relocated from the pesky stock location. The HKS air filter element was also changed with a new one, and a new fuel filter keeps contaminants out of your petrol. Aiding both auditory and physical response, a Blitz FMIC feeds a Tsukigi intake manifold and stock turbocharger which expels gasses through an HPI manifold, downpipe, and a titanium Trust catback exhaust. The powerband is smooth, responsive, and shifts through the 6 speed gearbox are communicative. Power is sent rearward through an OSGiken clutch, straight to the LSD rear. Blitz coilovers keep you glued to the pavement, and we installed new inner and outer tie rods to shore up the power steering system. Additional chassis rigidity is provided care of a Tanabe front chassis brace, a Cusco front strut tower brace, and a Tein rear strut brace. The ABS brakes engage rapidly, and we wrapped the aftermarket alloys in fresh Falken rubber to maximize traction for tens of thousands of miles to come. With a great slate of upgrades and modification, this SR is almost perfect, however we wanted to note a minor seep from the bottom of the timing chain cover. Still, it shouldn’t need addressing for a good while, and we’ve given this S15 the green light for years of enthusiastic driving here in the States!
