Exterior Overview
Speak to any enthusiast or current S15 Silvia owner and it’s plain to see, this chassis was worth the wait! The perfect coupé to propel Nissan into the new millennium, the S-Chassis’ final redesign pulled out all the stops, with improved angular bodylines, a comfortable and feature-packed cockpit, and the same tried and true rear-wheel drive layout that gave the platform its flowers in the very beginning. Our 1999 Spec S looks the part, in Silky Snow Pearl (WK0) with Garage Defend aero on the front, Vertex sides and rear, a factory Aero rear wing, LED Tail Lamps, and factory rainguards. Set off by 18″ Enkei wheels and aftermarket coilovers to plant the chassis to the ground, this Silvia is stunning, and shows well save for a few minor paint imperfections, chips, and dings. Even better, the 55k miles on the clock are verified and documented, and are a clear indicator this sleek S15 is barely broken in! The Spec S is an affordable, turn-key way to dive into Nissan’s sweetest sport coupe, and it goes without saying this iconic chassis is a true Japanese Classic!
Interior Overview
Nissan hit the mark with the S15’s interior. With an anthracite headliner, red-stitched steering wheel, and sport mesh upholstery, even this Spec S feels decidedly upmarket and is packed with a slew of power provisions to make daily use enjoyable. It’s also safer than the generation that preceded it, thanks to standard dual SRS airbags. The driver gains access to a tilt-adjustable steering column and the center stack is close by, within arm’s reach. The digital automatic climate control works like a charm, and is primed and ready with cold A/C to assist during the warmer months. Hot heat is on tap too, and an adjacent Pioneer audio system features Bluetooth functionality to pump in your own tunes. Power windows, locks, and power folding side mirrors are in good working order to boot. A rear bench is present, and the upholstery throughout is free of any unwanted rips, stains, or other defects. To maximize storage space, the rear seatback can drop down to provide a passageway to the trunk. The headliner is tidy, and a pillar-mounted OEM oil pressure gauge works like a charm. All in all, we can’t find much to scrutinize in this cockpit, save for a crack on the driver’s door card, a tint bit of carpet wear in the driver’s footwell, and a missing ashtray. All in all, this example seems well cared for in a prior life, and we think the next owner is bound to agree.
Mechanical Overview
Nissan’s SR20 engine has a lot of history and staying power. This chain-driven four-banger is easy to service, fun to rev up to redline, and fresh off a recent tune-up here in the shop. Cranking over care of a new 12V battery, this 2.0 received an oil and filter service to get you on track for maintenance schedules. It drives like a dream, and shifts are handled by a smooth 5-speed manual gearbox. Gear changes are easy to articulate, and purists will appreciate the responsive rear wheel drive layout. New aftermarket coilovers keep the chassis planted, and we installed new front caster arms to keep the handling up to snuff. A fresh alignment was performed, and also helps maximize the lifespan of the fresh Falken rubber that was installed on all four corners. It tracks straight as an arrow, and we bled the ABS brakes so it stops on a dime. Turn-key, ready to rock, this timeless classic is ready to hit the road!
