Exterior Overview
Toyota’s 70 Series Land Cruiser is a fan-favorite model, suitable for a collection, overland build, or even a durable daily driver! Fun to customize, easy to own, and backed by a durable turbodiesel drivetrain, models like this 1993 KZJ78 are a hot prospect in today’s market, and with one-off Cadet Blue paintwork, a 2″ Lift, smoked tail lamps, and aftermarket 16″ alloys, this Land Cruiser Prado certainly stands out amongst drab day to day traffic. The custom finish is repainted down to the jambs, and save for a few paint imperfections, the cosmetics are above average on this 40+ year old design. We also wanted to note that the hood and front fenders were replaced in Japan. The 116k miles on the clock are barely broken in too, by Toyota’s standards. This iconic, boxy 4×4 is turn-key and fresh off a recent service. Needing nothing except a new driver, could this retro Cruiser be your next Japanese Classic?
Interior Overview
It’s not often a classic SUV comes along that checks all the boxes for style, performance, and interior amenities, but this Prado certainly excels at all three. The cabin is spacious, offers plenty of head and legroom, and even touts a desirable third row that can stow away if you need extra cargo space. Up front, the driver benefits from a tilt-adjustable steering column, and a lofty seating position so you can see far above traffic. The condition of the cabin is above average too, and puts most all 90’s SUV’s to shame. The center stack features functional climate control, with cold A/C and hot heat, and it’s even been modernized with a touchscreen US Pioneer Bluetooth head unit. Assisting daily use, power windows, locks, and electric folding side mirrors work like a charm, in true Toyota fashion. The patterned cloth upholstery on the seats spans all three rows and is free of any rips, stains, or tears. The headliner is taut against the roof, and the carpets are protected by a slick set of factory floor mats. Save for a crack atop the dash, this interior is stunning and has stood the test of time!
Mechanical Overview
The 1KZ-TE under the bonnet is as good as gold. This torquey turbodiesel is efficient, powerful, and easy to turn a wrench on. Better yet, we’ve done the legwork of performing some recent service, and this Cruiser churns over with haste. A fresh oil and filter service keeps the 3.0 well lubricated, and new serpentine belts were installed to reliably drive your accessories. We also performed a full coolant flush, and dropped in a new valve cover gasket to keep things in tip top shape. This four banger propels the Prado up to highway speeds in a jiffy, and a stout automatic transmission handles gear changes without sweating a drop, thanks to a new transmission pan gasket. Our trained technicians performed some expensive drivetrain maintenance and rebuilt the front hubs with new bearings and seals. This allows the factory e-lockers to engage reliably and eliminates unwanted drivetrain vibration. We also installed a thicker steering stabilizer and four brand new shocks while we were in there. Riding like passed Virginia State Safety inspection with flying colors. The power steering is easy to maneuver, and the truck is stable even at higher speeds. The brakes bite with ferocity, thanks to brake pads in the front, and rear shoes, and the 16’s are wrapped in meaty BF Goodrich all terrains. Not only do they look the part, they’ll keep you covered for miles upon miles of retro-classic cruising!
