The three-door SUV used to be all the rage in America, but now you’ll be hard-pressed to find many options to purchase. It seems here stateside we only want massive trucks that guzzle fuel and are awful to park. Alas, we have a solution, in the form of this 1999 Land Cruiser. Finished in a classic Millennium Silver (K73), this 4×4 is set off by OEM rainguards and refinished 16″ OEM wheels. Aside from a few light dings, chips, and scuffs, the body is in good shape, and this Prado is fresh off a comprehensive service. Boasting a meager 60k verified and documented miles on the clock, this J90 is barely broken in. Perfect for off-roaders and folks with adventurous spirits and active lifestyles, this Japanese Classic can be daily driven, wheeled, and anything in between. Reliable, unique, and easy to service; what’s not to like?

Interior Overview

Despite the smaller exterior dimensions, the cabin is quite spacious. It’s also nicely equipped with its functional power folding mirrors, electric locks, and power windows. Pilots of all sizes can find the ideal seating position courtesy of an adjustable steering column. The dashboard lacks any cracking or fading, and dual SRS airbags are standard. The center stack is close by and includes an automatic climate control system. Ice-cold AC and piping hot heat are on standby, and an aftermarket Panasonic head unit pipes in the tunes. The seats are trimmed in a textured blue and gray cloth. They lack any major rips, stains, or tears, and the same material is mirrored in the door cards. The rear row can recline, split fold, and tumble forward to create a flat loading floor. The headliner and carpets are in fine shape, and even the owner’s manuals, maintenance booklets, OEM carpet mats, and a spare key are included with the purchase. Aside from minor damage to the rear cup holder, it’s hard to critique the cabin, and it’s clear this terrific Toyota was cared for overseas.

Mechanical Overview

This body-on-frame truck is tough and so is the engine. Sold here in the USA, the 3RZ-FE under the hood is fresh off an oil and filter service. It churns to life with the twist of the key and was just tuned up with a new intake air filter and a set of spark plugs. To keep all of that fresh oil internal, we fixed a couple of pesky oil leaks. A new valve cover gasket was installed, as was a new oil pump seal and distributor o-ring. The rehabbed 3RZ feels fresh as a daisy and is linked to a stout automatic gearbox. Torque is fed through a selective transfer case that features Full-Time 4WD. To bolster the driveline, we replaced the front axle seals, and power gets to the ground just as it should. A low range and center locker can be utilized when off the beaten path, and the aggressive approach and departure angles are preferred by our overlanding aficionados. The suspension benefits from new front lower ball joints and new front lower control arms. It handles large and small potholes with confidence and is great on the interstate. When you need to slow down, ABS is standard. Disc brakes all around are nice to have, and we have installed new front brake pads and rotors to keep stopping distances short. The power steering is light and on point, and the short wheelbase allows this Prado to have a tight turning radius. Grip is handled by four new 31″ Falken tires. Freshly aligned, the new rubber looks mean, quells road noise, and will last for tens of thousands of miles to come.
