Exterior Overview
**Please note that this vehicle is being sold needing repair or replacement of the primary turbocharger. This Legacy has been state safety inspected and can be safely driven home. By purchasing this vehicle, the buyer assumes full responsibility for any diagnosis and repairs.**
Japan has always known how to push a chassis to its full potential, and this 1999 Subaru Legacy GT is a far cry from the neutered grocery getters we get here in the States. It’s backed by a raucous twin turbocharged drivetrain and this example shows well to boot, racking up just 104k verified and documented miles over the years. Sadly, the primary turbocharger has lost its mojo, and we’re passing this running, driving, state inspected project on to an eager new owner interested in either converting or repairing the parts. Boasting a clean Aspen White (51E) exterior, this wagon is set off by optional rear bumper spats, a factory rear spoiler, OEM Xenon headlamps, and WRX 16″ alloys. Save for a broken rainguard and a few minor paint chips, dings, and scratches, the exterior is in better shape than most 25 year old Subarus and it’s clear this one was cared for in a prior life as it lacks the corrosion that so commonly plagues USDM examples. New Subaru wagons are bulky, pricey, and lack character, why not try on this real deal Japanese Classic for size?
Interior Overview
The interior is shod in premium materials and feels a bit upmarket too, thanks to an OEM optional McIntosh audio and leather accented seating. The upholstery has held up well over the years, and the bucket seats are free of any unwanted rips, stains, or other defects. The driver gains a power adjustable seat and a tilt steering column to get comfortable, and a factory steering wheel houses an SRS airbag for any on road emergencies. The passenger gets one too, and it’s housed in a dashboard free of any unwanted cracks or fading. The center stack has a flip-out euro style cupholder and an adjacent digital automatic climate control system that can dole out hot heat at a moment’s notice. The A/C is operable but lacks a belt and tensioner. The McIntosh system really sings too, and supplements the boxer growl nicely. The back seats are as spacious as you’d expect, and they can also fold flat if you need to maximize the cargo capacity in this sport wagon. Aiding daily use, the power windows are functional, as are the locks, keyless entry, and folding mirrors. There’s even a retractable net in the cargo area to keep your furry friends from escaping to the front. This wagon has a lot going for it, and it’s a treat to drive around compared to more barebones Imprezas and Foresters. We even retained the owner’s manual, maintenance booklets, and the original carpet mats to preserve the history of this lovely Legacy!
Mechanical Overview
The EJ206 under the bonnet shares a boatload of parts with our Subarus here in the states, making servicing simple. Despite its slight power deficit, this project wagon can be driven normally, and the secondary turbo seems to spool up fine. This flat-4 starts right up, makes great compression, and we dropped in a new 12v battery to aid ignition and perform a proper road test. Power is sent to a legendary AWD system via a quick-shifting automatic gearbox. The Bilstein suspension is comfortable for a touring wagon, ideal for longer highway drives or cruises. We installed new front swaybar bushings for inspection, and the handling is predictable overall. The steering is on point too, thanks to new inner and outer tie rods we installed up front. The ABS brakes stop forcefully, although we wanted to note the front rotors feel a bit warped. To maximize traction the WRX alloys are wrapped in good Pirelli rubber. Good looking and full of tread they’ll keep you planted to the pavement for tens of thousands of miles to come!
