The Japanese weren't known for treating their trucks like trucks, which is why examples like this 1999 Land Cruiser still look so dang good!

Exterior Overview

What more can we say about the 100 series Land Cruiser? It’s been a staple on Stateside highways and byways ever since the chassis first debuted in 1998, and had a cult following in its Japanese Domestic Market, too. The Japanese weren’t known for treating their trucks like trucks, however, which is why examples like this 1999 VX Limited still look so dang good! Finished in a one-off Imperial Black, this luxury cruiser is easy on the eyes, and best of all, it’s ticked over an impressive 90k verified and documented miles over the years. The aesthetic is set off by OEM rainguards, LED tail lamps, one-piece headlamps, aftermarket fender flares and brand new Method wheels, which really work to modernize the chassis. Fresh off a recent service, this may just be the most premium SUV we sell, and it’s really hard to argue with a purchase from Toyota’s golden age. Ideal for city commutes, off-road expeditions, or a more casual glamping excursion, this Cruiser makes quite the case for being a Japanese Classic!

Interior Overview

The polished exterior is not a facade, as the interior is just as well-crafted as one might expect. Toyota was truly on top of their game when penning this cabin, and with a full slate of premium materials, power amenities, and versatile comfort options, it’s easy to see why these Cruisers are still daily driven en masse. The seats are upholstered in a plush tan cloth, with matching material in the carpet and door cards. These complement the soft-touch dashboard nicely, which sweeps the width of the cabin and features dual SRS airbags to keep your passengers safe up front. The driver gains a tilt-adjustable steering column, and a leather wrapped steering wheel to grip as you pilot down the highway. Upgraded Panasonic audio sounds swell, and adjacent automatic control is intuitive to operate. Cold A/C and hot heat can be funneled in the cabin on command, and dual zones allow for your rearward passengers to stay cool too. There’s even Bluetooth capability on the headunit to pump in your own tunes. Power windows, locks, and electric folding mirrors work like a charm, and this VX limited was optioned with an overhead storage compartment that has room for a few pairs of shades. The interior upholstery is all in good shape. The dash shows no signs of cracking or warping, and the seats are free of rips or tears. On any 25 year old cabin, perfection isn’t possible, and we’d like to mention some minor bolster wear on the driver’s seat, as well as some discoloration on the steering wheel. Still, the condition far surpasses our USDM units, and we think the next owner is bound to agree!

Mechanical Overview

This body-on-frame platform is sturdy and solid. We feel the same about the engine, which is as durable as they come. The 4.7L springs to life care a new 12v battery, and a new fuel filter, new spark plugs, and a new engine air filter keep the V8 running like a top. A new serpentine belt keeps the electronics properly powered, and we had one of our trained techs replace the valve cover gaskets so that the oil level stays full. The 2UZ-FE pulls as strong as an ox to redline and makes decent midrange power. It also sounds swell, through a Ganador catback exhaust. The gearbox shifts like it should and is well-built. The Full Time 4WD system that underpins this Cruiser is surefooted, and a low range and center locking differential are ideal for your off-road adventures. It’s highly comfortable over tarmac, and we have improved the suspension when it was on the lift. A new rear panhard bar and new sway bar bushings were installed. We also rebuilt the power steering rack with all new seals. We replaced the rack bushings, performed a flush, and replaced the inner and outer tie rods so we could dial in the proper alignment. The 100 tracks straight as an arrow and slows down with confidence courtesy of standard ABS disc brakes. Grip is handled by four new 33″ Falken all terrain tires. Mounted and balanced here at the dealership, these rollers reduce road noise, look mean, and will provide all the grip you’ll need for tens of thousands of miles to come.
