Exterior Overview
Toyota’s iconic 70 Series is still in production, but finding a three-door to export out of Japan has been really tough as of late. These little rigs are underpinned by a real body-on-frame platform and are powered by one of the best built turbodiesels of all time. This 1994 is a striking truck, with its fresh coat of Nori Green Paint (6X4). Set off by an aftermarket front bumper, rear door mounted spare tire, and multipiece 15″ BERG alloys, the body is in good shape aside from some light imperfections. Fresh off a recent service, this SX model is offered with a mere 85k verified and documented miles on the odometer. Capable enough to be wheeled through Moab, these haulers also make for competent year-round daily drivers and brash beach cruisers alike. Collectible, cool, and known for low operating costs, this J71 is a bona fide Japanese Classic.
Interior Overview
The 70 series cabin is simple. And while this chassis dates back to 1984, it has a surprising number of electric amenities. The driver benefits from a tilt-adjustable steering column and adjustable lumbar support. Power mirrors, electric locks, and power windows all work in typical Toyota fashion. The dashboard is in better shape than most, and aside from a tiny cut to the right of the glovebox, it’s hard to nitpick. A sweet brand new BOSS radio has been installed here at our dealership. For those who value safety, Bluetooth integration allows the driver to keep their eyes on the road, while belting out the tunes. It looks great and sounds even better. Below, a simple-to-use climate control system is primed to deliver piping hot heat and cold air conditioning. If you prefer more natural ventilation, a large power moonroof tilts and retracts, and the rear side glass can slide open. The assembly does make a bit of noise, but it works at the moment. The seats are in good shape and are upholstered in a blue and gray cloth. The material lacks any major rips, stains, or tears and is mirrored in the door cards. The door cards and carpets have avoided major abuse over the years, and aside from some light imperfections on the headliner, the owner clearly cared for this Land Cruiser in Japan. A wood grain wheel adds some contrast and a bit of class, and even the owner’s manuals and maintenance booklets are included with the purchase of this little Landy.
Mechanical Overview
The body-on-frame platform is robust, and the same can be said for the engine. Fresh off an oil and filter service, the 1KZ-TE under the hood springs to life courtesy of two new 12V batteries. The 3.0L benefits from a slate of maintenance, including a new fuel filter and new engine air filter. It creates gobs of low-end torque, and power is filtered through a stout automatic gearbox. It shifts like a champ, and the driver can choose to send the power to the rear axle or both. A low range is on hand for low-traction scenarios, and the hubs can be electronically locked from the comfort of the cabin. The driveline was bolstered with a fluid service for both differentials. It hustles up to interstate speeds with ease and slows down quickly thanks to four-wheel disk brakes. The power steering is light and on point, and we freshly aligned this J71 to ensure the nearly new Falkens last as long as possible. New front lower control arm bushings and new rear upper and lower shock bushings were also replaced, before this truck passed its VA state safety inspection with flying colors. Turn key and ready to go, this special little SUV turns plenty of heads and has the stones to back up its world-famous nameplate.
