Exterior Overview
The American market has always lacked some of Japan’s best designs. We did get the J100 Series Land Cruisers, yes, but missed out on the very best powerplant available. This 1999 is powered by the legendary 1HD-FTE turbodiesel, and is fresh off a recent service. Offered with a mere 119k verified and documented miles on the clock, this rig is barely broken in. Finished in a lovely Warm Silver Metallic over Light Grayish Beige (1B1) two-tone, this VX Limited is set off by bulging fender flares, a rare OEM bug defector, OEM spoiler, Sorex tow hitch, privacy tint, and 16″ chrome bullethole wheels. Aside from a few light dings, chips, and scuffs the paint is in good nick and this truck would stand tall at the local Cars & Coffee. Efficient, smooth, reliable, and highly capable, these Toyotas are terrific daily drivers, yet they can overland with the best of them. A Japanese Classic like this is tough to find, and is perhaps the most well-rounded JDM SUV out there!
Interior Overview
The cabin is cavernous and equipped well. It’s wide, with plenty of shoulder room, and much taller than anything else we sell. The swept dashboard design is modern-looking and it lacks any cracking or fading. Dual SRS airbags are standard, as is ABS, for those who may be safety conscious. The center stack includes a touchscreen climate control system and OEM audio. The A/C blows cold and the heat gets the cabin nice and toasty. Dual front heated seats keep your buns warm, too. The audio system functions as well and supplements the inline-6 powertrain nicely. The seats are trimmed in a tan-gray cloth and are in above-average shape. They lack any major rips, stains, or tears and the middle row can tumble forward to create more loading space. The driver has an adjustable steering column and power-adjustable lumbar support to find the ideal driving position. Power windows, locks, and power-folding mirrors all operate in typical Toyota fashion, making daily use more enjoyable. The headliner is in good shape, and the carpets and the door cards match the upholstery and have resisted major wear and tear.
Mechanical Overview
The crown jewel might just be the refined and powerful 1HD-FTE under the hood. This silky smooth 24-valve turbodiesel cranks to life care of two new 12v batteries and is vibration-free in its operation. A new engine air filter and fuel filter ensure top-tier power output, and one of our trained techs has refreshed the 4.2L with a new valve cover gasket. The straight six creates incredible torque and is linked to a stout automatic gearbox. Power is fed through a Full-Time 4WD system with a low range and center locker on standby for your next off-road romp. It gets up to highway merging speeds with confidence and offers a soft, insulated ride. To give the suspension a new lease on life, we replaced the rear upper and lower control arms, and a new front left ball joint. Additionally, new front sway bar links and rear sway bar link bushings were installed. It drives like a dream but we did want to note its no longer height adjustable. The power steering is light and on point. ABS brakes are standard and this behemoth slows down when called upon, and benefits from new front brake pads. The chrome alloys are all wrapped in brand-new 33″ Falken all-terrain tires. Freshly aligned, they will last for tens of thousands of miles to come and look mean as all heck. Turn key and ready to rock, this diesel Cruiser is a special truck, and is highly collectible to boot!
