Interior Overview
The interior is comfortable and jam packed with a full slate of power amenities and well crafted materials. Forward visibility is unmatched thanks to the truck’s tall ride height, and the grey vinyl dash tucks nicely into the front of the cabin. Dual SRS airbags are present up front for additional safety, and the driver can get comfortable with additional lumbar adjustment, an aftermarket seat heater, and a tilt adjustable steering column. The charcoal cloth upholstery is in good shape, and has resisted any serious wear apart from some minor fabric discoloration. The materials are in good shape and we think the next owner will be delighted with the upgrade. Further assisting daily use and comfort, power windows, locks, and side mirrors work like a charm, and in true 4Runner fashion, the power rear glass unfurls rapidly should you need to maximize airflow throughout the cabin. There’s even an expansive power moonroof which still slides fore and aft with ease. If you’re more of a windows up driver, automatic climate control works like a charm, with cold A/C and hot heat on tap when needed. Aftermarket touchscreen audio pumps in crisp tunes into the cabin, with Bluetooth and USB functionality to propel this Surf into the 21st century. A power rear under mirror can even unfurl from the rear wing to act as a parking aid. Positioned below the map lights, a factory field monitor displays outside conditions. The carpets are in good shape too, and if we were to note any defects the headliner has a few punctures from a prior accessory removal. Other than that, this Surf really knows how to get it done!
Mechanical Overview
The 1KZ-TE under the bonnet is a smart choice for this Surf. It’s powerful, easy to service, and way better on fuel than the gas guzzling V6 models. Ours is also fresh off a recent tune-up, service, and Virginia State Safety Inspection, where it passed with flying colors. We kicked things off by installing 2 new 12v batteries and a new fuel filter housing to ensure reliable startups. We also changed out the engine air filter, for good measure, and chucked in a new thermostat to help this Surf reach operating temp. We took care of a valve cover gasket leak, replacing the half moon seal while we were in there, and with the maintenance performed this Surf jets up to speed swiftly thanks to the diesel’s prominent low end grunt. An automatic gearbox sends power to a selective transfercase, where 2WD, 4WD, and a center locking differential option are all available. The suspension gobbles up potholes and road imperfections, and we fully rebuilt the steering rack to benefit your power steering system. The inner and outer tie rods were also preemptively replaced. The ABS brakes chomp down hard and benefit from a full brake fluid flush, and the refinished OEM wheels are wrapped in brand new Falken tires. After a fresh alignment, this menacing, murdered out surf is ready to take on daily duty or weekend camping excursions.
