While our suburban sprawl is dominated by V8 powered Land Cruisers, turbodiesels rule the roost in Japan, and this 1999 HDJ101 is a cherry example.

Exterior Overview

Toyota’s 100 series Land Cruiser is a legendary vehicle in its own right. They have a ton of staying power, as evidenced by the high mileage examples that still plod along on our stateside highways and byways today. While our suburban sprawl is dominated by V8 powered examples, turbodiesels rule the roost in Japan, like this 1999 HDJ101 VX-Limited. Backed by a buttery smooth 4.2TD, this Land Cruiser is a bonafide beast, and is finished in an eye-catching White Pearl (057). It also looks the part, with a factory rear spoiler, spare tire swingarm, and polished multipiece RIDE Blood Stock alloys. Oozing period correct appeal, this super SUV shows only a few paint imperfections, scuffs, and dings from daily use, and boasts an impressive 134k miles on the ticker. Efficient, capable, and durable enough to be a family heirloom, this is a Japanese Classic for many good reasons!

Interior Overview

As we’re well into the 21st century, it’s surprising a cockpit designed in the late 90’s would hold up so well. With durable cloth upholstery, easy to use amenities, and plenty of power niceties to assist daily use, it’s easy to see why Toyota was at the top of their game when designing this truck. The cloth seats are in good shape and mimic the pattern in the door cards and factory floormats. They’ve also resisted major stains, rips, or punctures, and complement the woodgrain trim on the dashboard nicely. Aluminum speaker covers class up the cabin, and match the shifter surround to boot. For safety conscious occupants, dual SRS airbags are standard, and the driver can get comfortable behind a tilt adjustable steering column. There’s also power adjustable lumbar support to assist on longer hauls. A Defi boost gauge is mounted centrally and gives the driver some additional insight into the engine’s performance, as well. The center stack is versatile, featuring an OEM multifunction touch screen and easy to use automatic climate control. Ripe with dual-zone heat and A/C, the cabin temps can be dialed in accordingly. If you prefer a natural breeze, an expansive power moonroof can slide fore and aft, and all four power windows work like a charm, too. Power locks and side mirrors assist daily use, with the latter electronically folding if you need squeeze in a tight parking spot. All in all, the interior condition is impressive, and save for some cracking on the woodgrain steering wheel and a non-operational head unit below the map lights, this classic cabin offers little to complain about!

Mechanical Overview

Under the hood is the real star of the show. Refreshed for its final redesign, the 1HD-FTE is a legendary turbodiesel, offering all the power that a full-sized SUV needs, with superior refinement and efficiency. We’ve given this one a hefty once over, starting with 2 new 12v batteries that help the 4.2l crank over with haste. As is standard procedure on all our diesels, we changed out the fuel filter to get you on track for future maintenance schedules, and an oil and filter service was performed to boot. A new engine air filter helps the FTE breathe easy, and with the maintenance done, it gets up to highway speeds in a jiffy. An automatic gearbox makes the most of the diesel’s substantial torque curve, and power is thrown to a full time 4WD system. As always, a center locking differential and low range are on hand for the die hards. The suspension got a hefty refresh, with new rear upper and lower control arms. This luxury cruiser truly rides like a cloud, which is impressive given its intimidating presence on the pavement. The power steering benefits from new seals on the rack, as well as inner and outer tie rods. Upgraded Brembo calipers help this behemoth stop on a dime, and we wrapped the wheels in fresh Falken all terrains. Stylish, comfortable, and quiet, this is the perfect tire pairing for this Cruiser, and we gave this truck a fresh alignment to button up the laundry list of great maintenance.
