Exterior Overview

The 4Runner is a cult classic here in the US, so it should come as no surprise that the cleanest examples usually lie in the hands of enthusiasts. This makes shopping for one a chore. We believe buyers shouldn’t have to compromise on mileage, condition, or options when examples like this JDM 1996 Hilux Surf exist! Finished in a rare Lavender Steel Metallic (926), this Surf was spec’d with an uncommon manual gearbox, a bulletproof 2.7l engine, and is fresh off a ton of good service here in the US. It’s a stylish example too, set off by an OEM rear spoiler, spare tire swingarm, OEM rainguards, OEM Bashbar, Bosch amber fogs, and WEDS Keeler alloys. Save for a few chips, dings, and spots of paint fade, the unique paintwork is in good condition, and enthusiasts will be happy to see this Surf has travelled a scant 102k verified and documented miles over the years. This N185 may have the most staying power out of any model here at the dealership, and with great miles, condition, and a full slate of options to assist daily use, it’s easy to see why we call it a Japanese Classic!

Interior Overview

The cabin features decent ergonomics, some important safety equipment, and a bevy of electric amenities. Like the 4Runner, the Surf has drop-down rear glass, which is a signature feature and improves cabin ventilation and cargo capacity! Fashioned in a complementary Moon Mist cloth, the interior is in great shape, and Toyota bolstered its design with fashionable and durable materials. The seats show no major rips, stains, or tears, and the dash cover sports soft-touch vinyl, which has resisted any unwanted cracks, fading, or distortion from sun exposure. The same material ties into the door cards, which are in equally good nick. The driver can find the ideal driving position courtesy of a tilt-adjustable steering column and optional adjustable lumbar support. Rear occupants have a 4-way reclining rear seat back, which wasn’t offered in the 4Runner here Stateside. The rear seats can also split-fold and tumble forward to create a flat loading floor. Power windows, power locks, and power mirrors all work in typical Toyota fashion, making daily use more enjoyable. One of our team members also brought the audio up to current-day standards. A new BOSS radio was installed with Bluetooth integration, so you can keep your eyes on the road while streaming some tunes. The dashboard lacks any cracking or distortion, and dual SRS airbags are standard equipment. The headliner is in good shape, while the headliner is clean and held tight and taut to the roof. Aside from some light cargo stains in the cargo area, there is little to complain about within the cabin, and it’s clear the cockpit was cared for overseas. Even the OEM carpet mats, owners manuals, and maintenance booklets are included with the purchase.

Mechanical Overview

Under the skin, this Hilux is almost identical to our US 4Runner models. The engine, transmission, driveline, brakes, and suspension are all the same, so sourcing parts is easy as pie and performance upgrades can be had for next to nothing. These engines are chain driven, so no costly belt service needs to be performed. These 2.7L mills are reliable, punchy, and easy to work on, too. While crank pulley separation is a common failure point on these engines, it was addressed by one of our trained technicians immediately, with a brand new one already fitted! The 3RZ-FE powering this rig is fresh off an oil and filter service, and whirs to life care of a new 12V battery. Proper thermal management is always a priority with us, so we replaced the radiator and added fresh coolant to the system. A new engine air filter and new fuel filter keep the four-banger running right as rain. Torque is fed through a stick shift transmission and sent to either the rear wheels or to both axles. We replaced the shifter bushing, and now this gearbox feels like a Miata. That might be a bit of poetic license, but for a truck, it’s quite communicative and shifts lacking any grinds or hitches. The driver also has a level of control over the platform absent from slushbox-equipped units. The selectable transfer case can be engaged on the fly, and low range is on hand for the occasional beach outing or trail run. The suspension feels predictable and is sporty for a truck. New lower control arms and front sway bar bushings were installed, and we aligned the Surf so it tracks straight as an arrow. The power steering is easy to articulate, and the smaller exterior dimensions compared to today’s SUV make parking a snap. The brakes feel confident, and grip is handled by four new 31″ Falken tires which look mean, quell road noises, and will last for tens of thousands of miles to come. Turn key and ready to rock, this Toyota is the complete package!
