Honda deviated from the norm when penning this roadster, equipping it with a freshly designed high-revving I-4 and responsive rear-drive architecture. Our 1999 AP1 is worth bragging about too, with only 47k verified and documented miles on the clock.

Exterior Overview

The S2000 was a pivotal vehicle for Honda, and the perfect vehicle to propel the brand forward into the new millennium. It remains a favorite amongst enthusiasts to this day, as it was an engineering marvel at the time. Honda deviated from the norm when penning this roadster, equipping it with a freshly designed high-revving I-4 and responsive rear-drive architecture. Our 1999 AP1 is worth bragging about too, with only 47k verified and documented miles on the clock. Finished in Silverstone Metallic (NH-630M), and set off by a new power-retractable soft top, this S2k is in good nick overall. We wanted to note the hood was replaced in Japan, and some typical paint chips and dings on the body. Our first S2000 is a good one.  An unmolested, bone stock version is tough to find and this example was well cared for in a prior life. Don’t miss out on this genre-defining Japanese Classic!

Interior Overview

The interior is a highlight of the AP1 chassis, with a true cockpit-esque feel designed for the enthusiast. The S2000 is our first model to boast push-button start technology, which integrates nicely into the sweeping dash design. A digital cluster is motorsport-inspired and a focal point of this timeless interior. The materials are also unique to the Japanese market, with cloth-insert seats resisting serious wear and tear over the years aside from some wear to the driver’s outside seat bolster. The same can be said for the remaining upholstery, which lacks any cracking, fading, or excessive UV damage. Tucked away in a dash cubby, Pioneer audio is on hand and sounds crisp and clear from when you need to drown out the 2.0’s screaming 9,000RPM redline. In true motorsport fashion, the control center is all within a finger’s reach of the steering wheel. Cabin climate is left to the discretion of the driver, with knobs and switches close by and in good operating order. Cold A/C and hot heat work like a charm too, if you decide to keep the soft top latched shut. Both windows up front are power-adjustable, as are the locks and mirrors. Dropping the top is a stress-free affair and a toggle switch is mounted centrally to make the process quick and seamless. To further protect your investment, we retained the factory carpet mats, owner’s manual, and maintenance booklet, and aside from an inoperable radio screen and some wear to the climate control knobs, we’ve found little to gripe with in regard to this cabin condition.

Mechanical Overview

Above all else, the F20C engine under the hood is what truly earned the S2000 its flowers. The highest revving powerplant we’ve seen to date, this frisky four-banger will kiss 9,000 RPM at redline. Its longitudinal, front-mid engine layout allows it to sit snugly in the back of the engine bay, prioritizing weight distribution. Ours is fresh off a recent service, where we rehabbed the F series with a fresh oil and filter service, and installed a new 12v battery to aid ignition. We threw in a new radiator and thermostat to regulate thermal load, and this S2k is primed and ready to hit the tarmac. Gear changes are handled manually thanks to a responsive six-speed manual box. The S2000’s handling is world-class right out of the gate, the electric steering is responsive and easy to navigate, and the ABS brakes bite with ferocity. The stock alloys are wrapped in brand-new Toyo rubber. Freshly aligned, the new tires reduce road noise and most importantly will keep you adhered to the pavement for tens of thousands of miles to come. A favorite amongst driving purists, brand loyalists, and Japanese car nuts alike, the S2000 is truly one of a kind.
