The Hilux Surf is our best selling model, and after a quick drive it's easy to see why. It offers loads of benefits over our domestic 4Runners, and is typically a better buy all around! Less miles, tidier interiors, and who can forget the durable intercooled diesel drivetrain that really sets this 1999 Surf apart from the pack. It also has some appealing cosmetics too, and is finished in Toyota Black (204) Set off by an optional front skid plate, rear tire carrier, sport hood, and OEM rainguards, this is one snazzy SUV, and we know most buyers feel good about seeing 119k verified miles on the clock as well. Refinished aftermarket wheels complete the aesthetic and complement the black and chrome exterior nicely. Save for a few small paint defects, it's hard to find any major gripes with the condition, and this Surf would shine as a daily driver, roadtrip warrior, or Toyota meet standout. On the road or off the beaten path, nothing stands out quite like this Japanese Classic!
Those familiar with the 4Runner's cockpit already know how good the Surf's interior is. We argue this example might be a hair better, thanks to exclusive Blue Tiger patterned upholstery and a condition that indicates this rig was cared for in a prior life. The dash is in surprisingly good shape too, and dual SRS airbags are handy to protect in the event of an emergency. The center stack design was revised for these facelift models and features more functional cupholders and a new, easy to use digital automatic climate control unit. Adjacent to the HVAC, period correct Alpine audio works like a charm for being 25 years young and complements the rest of the functional power equipment in this Surf. Power windows, locks, and mirrors that is, and a rear window that can open up at the press of a button. The headliner is in good shape, as are the matching cloth door card inserts and plush carpeting below. A proper SUV would be nothing without utility, and the rear bench can fold flat to expand the cargo hold in the rear. If additional space is needed, the retracting rear window can be used to accommodate oversized objects. Overall this cabin is a great place to be. As a commuter it's comfortable and packed with amenities, and we even retained the owner's manual and maintenance booklet for good measure.
The 1KZ-TE has proven to be a stout unit for the 6 or so years we've been importing the platform, and this revised intercooled model is among the best of the bunch! Better yet, we've given this truck tons of great service, and the 3.0 turbo diesel cranks over quickly thanks to a new 12v battery. From there, an oil and filter service was performed, and we changed out the engine air filter and fuel filter to keep the 1KZ contaminant free. New serpentine belts were also installed to give this turbodiesel a proper road test, and with the maintenance performed it now jets up to highway speeds in a jiffy. A new transmission pan gasket was installed to keep your gearbox topped up on lubricant, and we replaced a transfer case output seal so you can shift seamlessly between 2 and four wheel drive. For trips off the beaten path, this truck also features an optional center locking differential and low gearing if you become entrenched. We also refreshed the drivetrain with a new wheel bearing at the right front, and a rear left axle seal. The power steering pump and steering rack were rebuilt here in house, new rack bushings were installed, and this Surf now steers as you'd expect. It also stops on a dime, thanks to new pads and rotors up front. The last line of defense between you and the pavement, new Falken all-terrain tires keep you covered on grip. Not to mention they look dang good too, and should deliver a comfortable ride for tens of thousands of miles to come!
