Exterior Overview
A proper rear-drive roadster is a rarity these days, and this 1999 BMW Z3 is an automotive masterpiece penned by one of the brand’s most prolific designers. It feels fitting in our inventory, and this Arctic Silver (309) example features the same inline-four powerplant we received here in the States, so parts and service are a snap. Aside from a few light chips, dings, and scuffs the paint is in fine shape, and this droptop is set off properly by OEM Style 36 wheels. Best of all, this recently serviced convertible has a brand new soft top, and is offered with only 24k verified and documented miles on the clock, which is a fraction of what you would find here in the US. Balanced, stylish, and rewarding to drive, this Japanese market BMW is a bit atypical, but a classic nonetheless.
Interior Overview
The cabin is simple, snug, and includes some decent electric options and phenomenal upgrades. Dual SRS airbags are standard and the dashboard lacks any cracking or fading. The driver and passenger rest comfortably in electric adjustable leather and sport mesh seats, which lack any major rips, stains, or tears. They’re complemented nicely by red leather accents on the door panels and center armrest. Power windows, power locks, and power mirrors all work, making daily use more enjoyable. The M Sport steering wheel looks good and feels even better in the palm. An upgraded Blaupunkt head unit looks period correct, yet features Bluetooth functionality to push this cabin into the 21st century. Aside from some minor scratches atop the dash, the cabin is in terrific shape. A set of carpet mats protect your upholstery underneath, and even the factory toolkit is still in place in the trunk!
Mechanical Overview
Under the hood sits BMW’s stalwart M44 engine. Fresh off an oil and filter service, the 1.9L cranks over with haste. A new alternator keeps the electronics reliably powered, and we also replaced the engine air filter and fuel filter as part of this four-banger’s tune-up. To keep the fresh oil topped up, we replaced a weary old valve cover gasket with a new one. The 1.9l benefits from a new radiator to keep temperatures in check, and the motor sends power through an automatic gearbox to the rear wheels. It’s peppy from stoplight to stoplight and can cruise comfortably on the interstate. The 50/50 weight distribution aids handling, and the suspension can handle the rigors of daily use and abuse. We threw new front lower control arms on, and with the maintenance performed this little roadster feels dialed! The brakes feel confident too, and the power steering is direct and provides plenty of feedback. The all-season rubber is nearly new and helps promote grip and quell road noise. Turn key and ready to go, this BMW is the perfect ride for the upcoming summer and fall months. It would make for an easy-to-service, affordable, and unique sports car, and its gets more than its fair share of looks!
