Exterior Overview

Toyota’s debut of this now-classic SUV design occurred at the 32nd annual Tokyo Motor Show. It was a smashing hit on the convention center floor, and that translated to a dealership showroom sales success. The brand coined the term Grand Cruiser to describe this new platform, and we would have to agree with the choice. Grand is defined as magnificent and imposing in appearance, size, or style, and this J100 is most certainly our largest SUV offering currently. It’s also refined, with numerous luxury appointments and an impressive amount of standard safety equipment. Powered by a silky smooth V8, this VX Limited model is fresh off a recent service including a new timing belt and water pump, and boasts a meager 62k verified and documented miles on the clock. Aside from a noted front bumper replacement in Japan and a few light dings, chips, and scratches, the Pearl White (057) paint is in good shape. Adorning this rig is a subtle set of OEM rainguards, an optional gloss black optional OEM grille, and a set of brand new, wide 17″ Icon wheels. Reliable, easy to service, and capable, these trucks make for incredible year-round daily drivers and can also pull double duty as a dedicated overlander. Highly collectible, this 4×4 is one of the greatest SUVs ever conceived, and that’s why we feel it’s a true Japanese Classic!

Interior Overview

The cabin is in wonderful shape. It’s also spacious and loaded with electric amenities. The driver and passenger both benefit from standard dual SRS airbags for added peace of mind. To find the ideal driving position, a tilt-adjustable steering column and electric lumbar support are on hand. The dashboard lacks any cracking or fading, and a large, optional infotainment screen has controls for the digital automatic climate system and audio. Both work like a charm, as you might expect. The A/C blows cold, the heat is piping hot, and the audio quality is decent. If you prefer more natural ventilation, a large power moonroof can tilt and retract, and the rear quarter glass flares outward for better cabin airflow. The power folding mirrors, electric locks, and power windows all function in typical Toyota fashion, making daily use more enjoyable. The tan cloth seats are in above-average shape. They lack any major rips, stains, or tears. The middle row slides forward to accommodate more cargo, and the rear row folds up tightly against the d-pillar. Aside from some light steering wheel wear, it’s hard to complain about the interior condition. The headliner, door cards, and carpets are in good shape, and even the original owner’s manual, OEM carpet mats, and two spare keys are included with the purchase of this lovely Landy.

Mechanical Overview

This body-on-frame beast is a far cry from new crossovers, which are basically tall sedans with unit-body construction. The 2UZ-FE is a gem of an engine and is fresh off an oil and filter service. To check your fluids, new hood shocks have replaced the old original units. A new battery assists the V8 with quick ignition, and new spark plugs and ignition coils allow for smooth engine operation. We also replaced the fuel filter to keep unwanted contaminants out of the combustion chamber. Best of all, one of our trained technicians installed a new timing belt and water pump. This service is good for ten years, and we also performed a coolant flush and added a new thermostat to achieve proper thermal management. The 2UZ is linked to a stout automatic gearbox. It shifts like a champ and feeds torque through a Full-Time 4WD system. A center locker and low range are on standby. It hustles up to highway speeds effortlessly, and the ride quality is much better than our average run-of-the-mill JDM SUV. The active height control suspension offers three ride height settings and can handle the rigors of daily use and abuse. For state inspection, we replaced the front sway bar links, too. The ABS brakes are confident slowing this large Toyota down. New front rotors and pads work to decrease stopping distances and will last for a long while to come. The power steering is light and easy to articulate, and grip is handled by four new 33″ Falken tires that we mounted and balanced. Turn key and ready to roll, this clean, low mileage Land Cruiser is one you won’t want to miss out on.
