Exterior Overview

Vehicles like this Hilux Surf are our bread and butter. They are easy to service, resilient, and capable trucks, and examples like this 1998 have logged a fraction of the use of most American 4Runners. Boasting only 69k verified and documented miles, this recently serviced Toyota is turn-key and ready to rock! Even better its nearly buletproof V6 drivline is shared with US 4Runners, which makes parts and mainatence options a walk in the park, Finished in a classic Stellar Blue over Gray (8L7), this sporty SUV is set off by some neat three spoke 16″ OEM alloys, an OEM spare tire swingarm, rainguards, privacy tint, and a stylish rear spoiler. Aside from some light dings, chips, scuffs, and a bit of lost clearcoat on the spoiler, the paint is in good shape, and this rig would be at home out on the beach, crawling the campsite, or whipping through the parking lot of your local Cars & Coffee. Packing a spacious cabin with a number of safety features and upgrades, these Surfs make for great year-round family haulers. Affordable, tough as nails, and most of all fun to drive, this Japanese Classic won’t stick around here for long, especially with those miles!

Interior Overview

The cabin is ergonomic, in good condition, and includes a few upgrades. For those who value safety, dual SRS airbags are standard, as are anti-lock brakes. The dashboard lacks any cracking or distortion, and the center stack is close by and within arm’s reach. The driver benefits from a tilt-adjusting steering column, and this upgraded seat includes optional lumbar support. A simple to use OEM audio system pumps out the tunes, and the digital automatic climate control above mixes in cold A/C and piping hot heat depending on your preference. If you prefer more natural ventilation, the rear glass powers down, the side windows are electric, and the OEM optional moonroof can tilt or retract. Power locks and power mirrors also work in typical Toyota fashion, making daily use more enjoyable. An OEM field monitor is located by the map lights and displays information about the outside conditions, should you lose cell service. It also looks brand new! The seats are trimmed in a blue and gray textured cloth that is mirrored in the door cards. The upholstery lacks any major rips, stains, or tears. The middle row can tumble forward to accommodate more cargo, and can also 4-way recline and fold flat into the floor. The steering wheel and interior plastics are in above-average shape, and the headliner is clean while still being held tight and taut to the roof. Aside from some light carpet stains and some wear on the driver seat bottom, it’s hard to nitpick the cabin as this interior was clearly cared for in a prior life overseas.

Mechanical Overview

Under the skin, this rough-and-tumble truck is nearly identical to our domestic 4Runners. The legendary 5VZ-FE under the hood churns to life care of a new 12V battery and is fresh off an oil and filter service. A new fuel filter, new spark plugs, and a new engine air filter give the V6 a proper tune-up, and one of our trained techs has refreshed the 3.4L with a new valve cover gasket and half moon seals. The quad cam mill pulls hard to redline, and power is fed through a stout automatic gearbox. The drive can switch between 2WD and 4WD on the fly, and for your off-roading adventures, a low range and optional center locking differential can be engaged. It hustles up to highway speeds, and the suspension is predictable, connected, and can handle the rigors of daily use and abuse. For a truck, it stops well, and new front brake rotors and pads were installed up front. The power steering is assisted and direct, and grip is handled by four new 31″ tires. The new rubber not only looks mean, but will last for tens of thousands of miles to come, and reduce road noise. This Hilux Surf is our best-selling platform for all too many reasons, and this special example is one for the ages.
