Exterior Overview
The 4Runner is a midsize SUV that does it all. The same can be said for its Japanese cousin, the Hilux Surf. You can see why we target rigs like 1996, as it’s logged a mere 59k verified and documented miles since new, which is nearly unheard of with stateside examples. Powered by the same reliable four-cylinder sold here in the States, this SSR-X is fresh off a recent service and is turn-key ready to roll. Finished in a lovely Stellar Blue (8L7), this 4×4 is adorned by an OEM rear visor, OEM spare tire swingarm, OEM rainguards, refinished 16″ factory alloys, and some subtle privacy tint. The body in good shape aside from a few light dings, chips, and scuffs, and this 1996 would be one heck of a cool campsite companion or unique family hauler. Reliable, safe, efficient, and easy to service, these models fly off the shelves here at our dealership. Ideal as year-round daily drivers, yet still highly capable off the beaten path, this go anywhere, do anything sports utility is a real deal Japanese Classic!

Interior Overview
The cabin is in above average shape and includes numerous safety features, and couple of factory and aftermarket upgrades. The driver benefits from a tilt-adjustable steering column and adjustable lumbar support to find the ideal driving position. Power locks and mirrors work in typical Toyota fashion, making daily use more manageable. The center stack is close by, and a Kenwood audio upgrade looks modern and sounds great. Above, a simple to use automatic climate control system dishes out ice cold A/C and piping hot heat. If you prefer more natural ventilation, the rear glass powers down, a large factory moonroof can tilt and retract, and the side windows drop down with the press of a button. An OEM field monitor is located by the map lights and displays information about the outside conditions to those within the cockpit, should you lose cell service. The moon mist colored cloth upholstery is in above-average shape. It lacks any major rips, stains, or tears and is mirrored in the door cards. The headliner is clean and held tight and taut to the roof, and the door cards lack any major imperfections. The carpets have withstood the past quarter century without sustaining major abuse, and aside from some light dashboard distortion by the right side of the glovebox, it’s hard to complain about the interior condition overall.

Mechanical Overview
Under the skin, this body-on-frame SUV is the same as our 4Runner. The same goes for the engine, the 2.7l 3RZ-FE. Fresh off an oil and filter service, this four banger churns to life care of a new 12V battery. A new engine air filter and new fuel filter were installed as a part of our tune up and we also addressed the vehicle’s ECU. Professionally rebuilt by Japanese ECU repair, it carries a lifetime transferrable warranty on any repaired components, and gets this 3RZ running right as rain. The four-banger is linked to a strong automatic that shifts gears just as it should. Power can be sent to the rear axle or both, through a selectable transfer case. Low gearing is also on hand should you have a beach trip or snowstorm to trudge through. It gets up to merging speeds without breaking a sweat and is comfortable cruising at American interstate speeds. The ABS brakes do a decent job of slowing this truck down, and new front pads and rotors were installed by one of our trained techs. New front sway bar links were replaced for state inspection purposes and the suspension is predictable and can handle the rigors of daily use and abuse. The power steering is direct and on point. Grip is handled by four new 31″ Falken all-terrain tires. Mounted and balanced here in our shop, they quell road noise and will last for tens of thousands of miles to come!
