Exterior Overview
The Aristo is a special car, and one of our favorite luxury sport sedans here at the dealership. This 1998 JZS160 is especially unique, boasting a full slate of top-shelf aero, and a drivetrain that’s identical to USDM models, making servicing a snap. Finished in Alpine Silver Metallic, this Vertex Edition is a looker, with a Quest Power front bumper, Kaaz Sport grille, Wise Sports side and rear aero, a FRP Blitz Spoiler, and LED tail lamps polishing off the period-correct aesthetic. Sitting on refinished late-model Lexus rolling stock and aftermarket coilovers, this Aristo matches the luxury sport aesthetic to a T. Save for some minor paint imperfections, this tourer looks terrific, although we wanted to note the mileage shown is not actual due to a replacement instrument cluster. These Aristos make for phenomenal daily drivers, highway haulers, and they can take home the gold at a car show on any given day. With this slate of rare modifications, quality performance-enhancers, and good service here at the shop, this Japanese Classic is a real winner!
Interior Overview
Finished in optional black leather, the cabin is already in decent shape to start. Both driver and passenger benefit from adjustable power seats, which are heated to keep your tushy warm in the winter. This Vertex Edition boasts blackwood accent trim, which is nicely complemented by a soft-touch vinyl dashboard. Uncommon for most vehicles of this vintage, the dash materials are free of any fading, warpage, or other UV defects. Positioned snugly in the center stack, touchscreen Eclipse audio works like a charm, although the rear subwoofer is no longer operable. Positioned adjacent to the audio, dual zone climate control allows both driver and passenger to command cabin temps at will, and pumps in cold A/C and hot heat on command. Privacy tint also helps keep the harsh rays of the sun out of the cabin, but if you prefer a natural breeze, all four power windows can be unfurled, alongside a power moonroof. Power locks and electric folding side mirrors also work like a charm, the latter of which features integrated LED turn signals for a bit of extra pizzazz. The rear bench is spacious and can accommodate three additional passengers with ease. There’s plenty of headroom, and the headliner has remained in good shape to boot. The carpets are protected by some plush factory mats, and as a whole we think the above-average condition is a highlight of this Aristo overall, despite some normal wear to the driver’s seat leather.
Mechanical Overview
The 2JZ-GE under the hood is a fan favorite motor. It’s easy to see why, as parts are inexpensive, maintenance schedules are easy to follow, and they get decent fuel economy too. Ours has a laundry list of maintenance completed by our trained technicians, and to sort out some pesky oil leaks, we tore down the front of the engine for new camshaft and front main seals. Before buttoning it back up, we replaced the timing belt and water pump, and installed new valve cover gaskets up top. New spark plugs across the board help the 2JZ settle into a smooth idle, and this NA inline six is a treat to drive. It sings through a full stainless FGK exhaust, and we replaced the engine air filter and fuel filter for good measure. Power is sent to a smooth shifting automatic gearbox, which sends it straight to the rear wheels. The long wheelbase pays dividends at highway speeds, and new coilover suspension keeps the chassis planted to the pavement. There’s even a functional and rare Carbing strut brace that gives some added chassis rigidity. To pass its state safety inspection, we installed new front upper control arms, a new rear swaybar, and new swaybar links and bushings. The power steering is light and easy to maneuver about, and the nitrogen-assisted ABS brakes grab strong thanks to upgraded pads and rotors. The freshly refinished alloys are wrapped in brand new rubber on all four corners. Fresh off an alignment, you’ll track straight for the road ahead, and look good doing it!
