A logical continuation of the generations that preceded it, Mitsubishi's Evolution V was bigger, badder, and continued to push the brand toward legendary status in the performance car segment. Our 1998 is a fine example. Bone stock, ready to rock, and sporting just 74k verified and documented miles on the clock, this GSR is set off by a large factory spoiler and OEM rainguards. The Scotia White (W09) paintwork is also in great shape save for a few nicks here and there, and the Zack Sport-9 alloys have held up swimmingly. Backed by a turbo, all wheel drive layout you know and love, this Evolution is a future collectible and one heck of a good drivers car overall. Once forbidden fruit in the US, we can now experience one of Mitsubishi's greatest Japanese Classics!
Appointed from the very beginning with bespoke Recaro upholstery, the V's cockpit got a more premium treatment, with a more ergonomic layout and even adjustable thigh bolsters to assist comfort on longer drives! The rest of the cockpit stays true to the original formula. Back to basics styling with modern amenities to make any driver happy. The factory MOMO steering wheel looks hardly used or abused, and the dash shows well save for a few adhesive spots on the passenger side. Sharing a center stack layout with other Mitsu offerings of the time, the digital automatic climate control works like a charm and a period-correct Pioneer headunit sits adjacent, with funnels tunes into the cabin. Power windows, locks, and mirrors work as advertised to make daily use easier, and this cockpit is a really nice place to be overall. The Recaros are upholstered in sport mesh with suede bolsters, which do show a bit of pilling and wear from the past 25 years on the road. The back seat can fit a few extra passengers, and the headliner and carpet are both tight and tidy. For a bit of added history, we even preserved the factory owner's manual and plenty of original literature to make you feel good about your classic rally car investment!
The 4G63 under the hood needs little introduction and ours is backed by a recent service from our trained technicians too! Ours is fresh off a recent service, including an extensive engine-out job that took care of a slew of preventative maintenance items for the road ahead, including a full timing belt and water pump job which included a new thermostat! To keep all lubricant from the oil and filter service internal, the front main seal was replaced, and we also addressed the cam seals and a new valve cover gasket while we were in there. A new 12v battery aids ignition, and with the work performed this little 2.0 makes quick work of getting up to highway speeds. A close ratio 5 speed gearbox allows you to command your own shifts and is a perfect mate for this road going rally car, and power is sent to all four wheels, with selective drive modes giving you more control over driving dynamics. The active yaw control is fully functional and keeps this Mitsu planted in the twisties, and a new clutch and flywheel ensure reliable power transfer to the awd system. With a new diff output seal, this Evo is ready to hit the pavement, dirt, or snow, and the steering is easy to articulate. New rear pads help the factory Brembo brakes stop on a dime, and we wrapped the alloys in fresh Falken rubber, sure to do their part in any road condition you encounter!
