The cabin is in good shape and includes a few upgrades and optional equipment. The dashboard lacks any cracking or fading, and dual SRS airbags are standard. The center stack is close by and includes a simple to use automatic climate system. Cold A/C and piping hot heat are easily dispersed through the cabin, and below, resides a snazzy Kenwood touchscreen headunit. It’s got integrated Android Auto and Bluetooth integration to supplement your road trip. The driver benefits from a tilt-adjustable steering column and adjustable lumbar support. Power windows, power folding mirrors, and power locks all work in typical Toyota fashion, making daily use more enjoyable. Even the rear glass powers down to supplement airflow. The seats are trimmed in a durable charcoal cloth. The lack any major rips, stains, or tears. The headrests have been covered in leather and include TV screens! The middle row can slit fold, 4-way recline, and tumble forward to create a flat loading floor. The door cards, carpet, and headliner have escaped the past three decades without sustaining major abuse, and it’s clear the cabin was cared for in a prior life. This Surf even has an electric backup mirror that drops down from the spoiler to give the driver a view of what’s behind the rear bumper!
Mechanical Overview
The enthusiasts pick, the intercooled 1KZ-TE that powers this rig is an incredible engine. It makes more horsepower and runs lower EGTs than the non-intercooled iteration, and this 3.0L is fresh off an oil and filter service. A new 12V battery aids quick start up, and a new set of accessory belts ensures that all the on-board electronics stay properly powered. As part of our tune-up, a new engine air filter and fuel filter were swapped in, and we rehabbed the 1K with a new valve cover gasket so that the oil level stays full. The four banger creates loads of low end grunt and is mated to a stout automatic gearbox that shifts as it should. The driver can toggle between 2WD and 4WD on the fly, and for outings at the beach, a low-range 4WD and center locker can be utilized to keep momentum trudging forward. On pavement, the Surf sails up to highway merging speeds without breaking a sweat. ABS is standard, so when you need to slow down, you can. We flushed the brakes to improve the pedal feel and also replaced some front brake hoses, which were starting to crack. The long wheelbase aids high-speed stability, and the suspension is connected and predictable for an SUV. New front lower ball joints and new front swaybar end links were installed so that this SSR-X could ace its VA state safety inspection. We also overhauled the power steering system. The rack was rebuilt, the fluid flushed, and new rack boots and bushings were installed. A proper alignment was dialed in after, and future adjustments should be easy, as we replaced the inner and outer tie rods. Lastly, we mounted and balanced four new Falken all-terrain tires at each corner. The new tires will last for tens of thousands of miles to come and provide all the grip you should ever need!
