This 2001 is even more special, as it is an AWD model. Finished in Toyota’s eye-catching Spectra Blue Mica (8M6), this boxy runabout is set off by OEM rainguards, OEM chrome tail light garnishes, and chrome mirror caps. Aside from a few light dings, chips, and scratches associated with normal use, the body is in good shape. Interior Overview
The cabin is massive for such small exterior dimensions. The condition is also impressive, as the Japanese owner clearly took care of this bB. The dashboard lacks any cracking or fading, and dual SRS airbags are standard equipment. The driver benefits from a tilt-adjustable steering column, and the front bench seat is a neat upgrade compared to our American captain chairs. Power folding mirrors, electric locks, and power windows all work in typical Toyota fashion, making daily use more enjoyable. Audio is handled by an upgraded Pioneer headunit. It sounds decent and is mounted directly above the simple-to-use climate control system. Piping hot heat, ice cold A/C, and anything in between can be dialed in with large adjustment knobs that can be used with gloves. The seats are upholstered in a gray and black textured cloth. The material is soft, durable, and lacks any major rips, stains, or tears. The same material can be found in the door cards, which are in equally good nick. The rear seats split fold to create a flat loading floor that accommodates larger cargo. The headliner and carpets have faired well over the past 25 years, and even the owner’s manual and OEM carpet mats are included with the purchase of this lovely hatchback.
Mechanical Overview
The bB chassis is light, nimble, and a blast to motor. The added grip from the AWD system doesn’t hurt either. Fresh off an oil and filter service, 1NZ-FE starts up promptly courtesy of a new 12v battery. A new engine air filter works to maximize power output, and one of our trained techs has rehabbed the four-banger with a new valve cover gasket. A new MAF sensor was installed so that the 1NZ runs right as rain, and the dual overhead cam mill is linked to an automatic gearbox. It shifts as it should and puts power to the ground seamlessly thanks to a new front CV axle. It gets up to highway speeds without issue and is a competent interstate cruiser. The suspension is able to handle the rigors of daily use and abuse, and the ride quality was improved with a set of new front shocks. We also added new front sway bar end links and new front lower control arms so that this Toyota would ace is VA state safety inspection. An alignment was then performed, and this hauler tracks straight as an arrow. Power steering is standard and is easy to manipulate. The tiny size makes parking jobs easy as pie. The brakes feel confident, and grip is handled by four new tires we mounted and balanced at each corner. Knee deep in tread, they will last for tens of thousands of miles to come and quell road noise a fair bit. Turn key and ready to go, this practical, frugal, and fun hatch is ready to roll!
