Typically when you go shopping for a spacious hauler in the US, you have one of three options. You could purchase a new minivan, that's both uninspiring yet overcomplicated, you could shell out your life savings on a Sprinter conversion, or you could take advantage of the coolest turbodiesel 4WD van we never got here in the States! The latter refers to this 1998 Mitsubishi Delica, and optioned in Chamonix Mont Blanc trim, this unique transporter is more than meets the eye. Accented by a neat factory graphics package, optional body-color headlamps, and an integrated front brush guard, this is one seriously cool unit, and OEM rainguards, retractable side steps, and 16" Bridgestone CV wheels do a lot to drive the aesthetic home. Sure there's a few paint chips in the Sophia White (W09) paintwork, but with a color-matched interior and beefy Yokohama all terrains, you'll likely see past the nuances anyways. Sporting just 104k verified/documented miles, this trusty turbodiesel is barely broken in and runs and drives like a champ! Accessible, rugged, and built to traverse any terrain, this Delica is the crème de la crème of unique haulers!

The exterior gets the looks, but the interior of this Delica keeps drivers and passengers coming back time and time again. Upholstered in a premium ivory leather with burgundy accents, the seats are in excellent shape and as a whole this van appears to be well cared for in a prior life. Interior versatility was clearly Mitsubishi's top priority, and three rows of seating are able to be oriented to best suit your needs. To maximize cargo space, the rear bench can stow against the d-pillars, and for optimal comfort and camaraderie on a roadtrip, the middle bench can swivel a full 180 degrees to face the rear. Once at the campsite, all rows can be folded flat to deploy a makeshift sleeping surface so you can catch some Z's. Up front, both driver and passenger gain access to dual SRS airbags, and dual zone climate control so you can funnel both cold A/C and hot heat rearward as needed. To supply the tunes, Mitsubishi touch screen audio sits adjacent to the HVAC and helps supplement the turbodiesel soundtrack, and the dash and surrounding trim have resisted any serious wear and tear over the years. Both power windows work as advertised up front, as do the power mirrors, although the driver's unit no longer electronically folds. Factory keyless entry commands the power locks and makes daily driving a bit easier too. OEM carpet mats protect the floor from unwanted spills or stains, and the headliner was kept in good shape to boot! We can't find enough good things to say about this Delica's interior. It feels premium, has more than enough options for daily driving, and most importantly it was clearly treated with care by a previous owner.

For trips to campsites and off the beaten path, a torquey and dependable motor is necessary, and Mitsubishi's legendary 4M40 delivers in droves! Ours is fresh off a recent service and cranks over with haste thanks to two new 12v batteries we installed here in the shop. From there, we mounted up new serpentine belts and changed out the engine air filter and fuel filter to keep the 2.8 running in tip-top. We replaced a leaky valve cover gasket and performed an oil and filter service to keep lubrication up to spec. With the maintenance performed this turbodiesel soars up to highway speeds in a jiffy and the automatic gearbox sends the power rearward. If additional traction is required, Super Select 4WD can engage at speed and a center locking differential is on standby for when the going gets tough. We did a decent rehab on the driveline, and we replaced the rear lower trailing arm bushings, front sway bar bushings, and a differential mount at the front right. The suspension feels planted and comfortable overall, even over harsher terrain, and new brake pads on the front and rear help this Chamonix stop on a dime. The Yokohama 31" all terrain rubber is nearly new, grips strong, and gives this Delica the all business aesthetic needed to turn heads wherever it goes. Designed in Japan, inspired by the Alps, and a natural on stateside highways and byways, this Japanese Classic is a global sensation!
