Exterior Overview
For those with expanding families, adventurous hobbies, or just places to go, this 1997 Toyota might be the ticket. Built on a strong body on-frame platform, this Land Cruiser is powered by the same reliable 3.4L V6 that has become a hallmark of our domestic 4Runners and is fresh off a recent service. Offered with only 118k verified and documented miles on the clock, this 4×4 is barely broken in, and turn key ready to rock. Finished in Toyota’s lovely Dark Green Mica (6P3) this TZ model is set off by OEM optional chrome mirror caps and door handles, a factory bash bar, OEM rainguards, and 16″ aftermarket alloys. Handsome, reliable, and easy to service its no wonder why these Prado’s are bonafide Japanese Classics. Affordable, collectible, and cool these Cruisers won’t let you down!
Interior Overview
The cabin features loads of premium materials, numerous electric niceties, several safety options, and a ton of space. The driver can find the ideal driving position thanks to a tilt adjustable steering column, and head, shoulder, and leg room is abundant. The dashboard lacks any cracking or fading, and dual SRS airbags are standard equipment. A factory optional Field Monitor is mounted above the digital automatic climate controls. It displays info about the outside conditions should you lose cell service and matches the macho exterior aesthetic. The aforementioned climate control system is intuitive to operate and pumps out piping hot heat and cold A/C to keep everyone comfortable inside the cockpit. If those inside prefer more natural ventilation, the rear side glass pops outward and electric sunrof retracts and tilts to provide a light breeze. The OEM audio system is located adjacent and it works like a charm, filling the cabin with some tunes. The upholstery is in above average shape and this rig includes the optional stow away third row. The blue and gray cloth lacks any major rips, stains, or tears. The carpets, headliner, and door cards have withstood the past 25 years without sustaining major abuse. That’s not to say the cabin is perfect as we wanted to note three tiny dash holes above the glovebox previously used for a JDM nav mount. Also, there is some steering wheel wear and the power folding function of the drivers side mirror has given up the ghost. Still, the cabin is in above-average shape and was clearly cared for overseas.
Mechanical Overview
Under the skin, this Landy is closely related to its Hilux Surf and 4Runner brethren. The engine is the same, too and this 5VZ-FE is known for its durability and low cost of ownership. Fresh off an oil and filter service, the 3.4L churns to life care of a new 12v battery. A new intake air filter allows the V6 to breathe freely and power is sent through a strong automatic gearbox to a FullTime 4WD system. It accelerates well for its size and highway cruising is effortless. The steering is power assisted and one of our trained techs has rebuilt the power steering rack. New inner and outer tie rods were installed, as were new steering rack bushings that were dropped in prior to a fresh alignment. The suspension is soft yet predictable and we replaced the rear shock bushings and front sway bar links for safety inspection. We mounted and balanced four new Falken tires at each corner. They look mean and most importantly will last for tens of thousands of miles to come. Lastly we installed new front brake pads and rotors to keep stopping distances tight. ABS is standard and will come in handy during the occasional snow. Turn key and ready to rock, the J95 Land Cruiser can’t be beat!
