1997 Toyota UCF21 Celsior
In hindsight, it's unlikely Toyota could have done any better when thinking up the Celsior. To compete with the Germans, the brand designed an uber-reliable, plush, and safe sedan that anyone could be proud to own and drive. This 1997 is a special example, with its air ride suspension and type C specification. Finished in Diamond White (051), this stunning saloon is in good shape aside from some light dings and scratches associated with normal use. Set off by a set of factory gold emblems, this recently serviced and legally imported luxury sled is offered with a mere 38k verified and documented miles. Safe, spacious, and easy to service, this Japanese Classic would make for an ideal daily driver, cool weekend cruiser, or blank slate perfect for a VIP build. No matter how the next chapter of its life unfolds, this refined, collectible, and affordable UCF21 is a sure bet!
The interior is among the nicest we have ever seen, and it's obvious the car was cared for in a prior life. Items like the functional OEM air purifier and factory carpet mats are great to have on hand, and are rarely found together. The view of the road ahead is clear and commanding and the dashboard lacks any cracking or distortion. It houses dual SRS front airbags and a logically laid out center stack, with functional OEM audio and digital dual-zone climate controls. It's important to remember that dual-front zones were uncommon at that point this system is great to have when the driver and passenger run different internal temps. The A/C and heat work as advertised and if you prefer more natural ventilation, electric side glass a power retractable sunroof can be accessed at a moment's notice. The power equipment doesn't stop there, and both front seats and the seat belt adjusters are powered. Need more electric equipment? The driver benefits from a power-adjustable steering column, power-folding mirrors, electric locks, and keyless entry. In typical Toyota fashion, these all work properly. The seats are trimmed in a soft, tan cloth. They lack any major rips, stains, or tears and are in above-average shape. The carpets, door cards, and headliners have also withstood the past 25 years without sustaining major abuse.
Under the bonnet, the tried and true 1UZ-FE sits, primed and ready to be put to work. Fresh off an oil and filter service, the 4.0L whirrs to life care of a new 12v battery we installed here in the shop. To keep the powerplant running tip-top, new spark plugs, wires, and a new fuel filter have been installed. A known point of failure, the ECU was professionally rebuilt and even comes with a transferrable lifetime warranty! To maintain proper lubrication at all times, new valve cover gaskets have replaced the leaky old ones. Power is fed through a slick-shifting automatic to the rear wheels. Acceleration is decent for such a large vehicle, and on the highway, this Celsior really hits its stride. Potholes and uneven pavement are gobbled up by the height-adjustable air suspension. The steering is light and easy to articulate and the turning radius is tidy, despite being a land barge of sorts. The wheels all have new rubber-mounted and balanced at four corners. They quiet down the road noise even more and most importantly they will last for tens of thousands of miles to come.
