Our best-selling import for 2022 has been the Hilux Surf, and with good reason. They are reliable, trustworthy, stylish, and practical. Models like this 1996 are highly collectible here in the states, and the market has exploded over the past couple of years if you have been keeping close tabs on it. Finished in a fresh coat of Blueprint (8X8), a factory Toyota hue, this striking five-seater is set off by a set of bronze aftermarket alloys, an OEM rear spoiler, and rugged Falken tires. Prior repairs in Japan include a replacement driver door and right front fender, but this SSR-G is no worse for the wear. Recently serviced and turn key ready to rock, this V6-equipped truck is offered with a mere 148k verified and documented miles. Boasting a spacious interior with plenty of power amenities and a host of safety upgrades over its predecessor, it's no wonder these things are so desirable. Unique, tough, and built to stand up to the test of time, this VZN185 is a true Japanese Classic.

The cabin is spacious, nicely appointed, and was taken care of overseas. The view of the road ahead is clear and commanding, as this tall truck rides far above traffic. The dash lacks any cracking or fading, and houses dual front SRS airbags for some added peace of mind. Atop the windshield, by the map lights, sits an OEM field monitor which displays the vehicle's direction of travel, the exterior temperature, and barometric pressure. The center stack includes automatic climate control with air conditioning and heat on standby for those who plan to drive in all climates. If you prefer natural ventilation the electric rear glass and power windows make for a quick breeze. Additional electric equipment includes functional power locks, OEM air purifier, and power side mirrors. If that wasn't enough, even a power rear under-mirror unfurls from the spoiler so that you can see the rear bumper when parking. This little detail might just save you from crumpling the Tesla parked behind you when the truck is in reverse! The seats are in above-average shape and trimmed in a durable gray fabric. They lack any major rips, stains, or tears, and the driver even receives adjustable lumbar support. The rear occupants have 4-way reclining, split-folding accommodations. The American 4Runner never got the reclining rear bench option in case you want to brag about your ride. The carpets are in good nick, as are the headliner and door cards. Even the OEM carpet mats are included for the next buyer. That's not to say the cabin is perfect, as we wanted to note that the plastic covers on the climate controls are missing and the radio is inoperable, and the driver's side mirror no longer power folds. Still at a quarter-century old, it's remarkable how well this car was cared for!

Under the skin, this Surf is nearly identical to the US version. There are some upgrades over our stateside models, such as a selective transfer case with a locking center differential. This is a big deal for off-road enthusiasts and beachgoers alike, adding a bit more capability to this wonderful platform. The quad-cam 3400 V6 is a robust unit and is fresh off an oil and filter service. The engine starts up with the twist of the key thanks to a new 12v battery we installed here in the shop. To keep the 5VZ-FE running tip-top, one of our trained techs replaced the old leaky valve cover gaskets with new ones. We also took care of a small leak from the transfer case, too. These little fixes will give the new owner some additional peace of mind if they want to hit the road on an adventure immediately after purchase. This Hilux utilizes a smooth-shifting automatic gearbox, and drives well on the interstate and around town. If the driver wants to eke out a few more MPGs they can select 2WD, and 4WD can be electronically engaged with the press of a button if inclement weather is encountered. The suspension is predictable and can handle the rigors of daily use and abuse. There is tons of ground clearance too if you want to take a quick excursion off the beaten path. The ABS brakes feel confident, and the power steering is light and easy to articulate. To complete the reconditioning, we mounted and balanced four new 31" Falken all-terrain tires. Not only are they mean-looking but most importantly will last for tens of thousands of miles to come.
