1997 Toyota Hilux Pickup
Available for: $28,495
Toyota never really felt like reinventing the wheel as it related to the brand's prolific line of trucks. The Hilux model has always had a reputation for being reliable, unstoppable, and easy to service, so why mess with the secret sauce? This 1997 is the first of the LN165s we have imported, and we're happy to say it's quite a good evolution of the prolific vehicle that preceded it! Still reliable and efficient, this double cab pickup has received a healthy helping of much-needed horsepower, and a plush cabin with a few safety upgrades, too. Offered with a mere 114k verified and documented miles, this recently serviced double cab is turn-key and ready to rock. Finished in a classy Stellar Blue (8L7) this rig is set off with some bronze 15" alloys, OEM rainguards, a new spray-in bedliner, and a factory brushguard. Prior notable repairs in Japan include a replaced rear bumper, but she's no worse for the wear, and aside from some light dings, chips, and scratches, the paint is in good nick overall. Stylish, unique, practical, and highly sought after, our Japanese Classic pickups are the real deal!
The cabin is an impressive upgrade over the LN-107 it replaces. Dual front SRS airbags, power windows, locks, and mirrors make these trucks much better for daily use. The OEM audio can be switched on in case you get bored of the turbodiesel soundtrack emanating from the engine bay. It even has functional air conditioning and piping hot heat for those who live in mixed climates, and both work in typical Toyota fashion. The dash lacks any cracking or fading and the view of the road ahead is clear and commanding. A tilt-adjustable steering column allows the driver to get comfortable behind the wheel, and the light blue and gray textured upholstery is in above-average shape. The rear bench and front two seats lack any major rips, stains, or tears. The door cards, headliner, and carpets seem to have been cared for in a prior life, and we have no doubts the next owner will be proud of this Hilux's guts!
The body-on-frame platform can handle the rigors of daily abuse and keep on chugging. Powered by the 2L-TE four-banger, this Hilux gets up and moves much quicker than its predecessor. A new 12v battery aids ignition, and a fresh oil and filter service will ensure no scheduled maintenance will be required for another 3,000 miles. The 2.4L is connected to a slick-shifting automatic transmission. The selective transfer case gives the driver the ability to select between two and four-wheel drive. If the going gets tough, the ability to select 4WD low can be a lifesaver. Gobs of low-end power allow this midsize truck to get off the line with some urgency. To refresh the driveline we installed a new front right axle and one of our trained techs also replaced the rear shocks, too. The result is a much better ride on pavement and more predictable overall feel. The front brakes were also replaced, with new pads being installed while it was on the lift. The result is a truck that stops decently, even for its size. The power steering is light but on point, and the wheels are all wrapped in new tires. The meaty all-terrain rubber matches the tough-guy aesthetic, but most importantly will deliver tens of thousands of miles of year-round grip to come.
