Exterior Overview
The Hilux Surf platform is taking the domestic market by storm, and for good reason. These trusty 4×4’s share a frame with USDM 4Runners, and models like this 1997 SSR-X are backed by a dependable diesel powertrain, which is more responsive and better on fuel than our gas guzzling US market options. The 136k miles on the clock are also verified, documented, and a heck of a lot better than what we see stateside. The condition of this N185 is also a selling point, and the brand new Plum Crazy(FGG/PHG) paintwork really sets this truck off. OEM rainguards and an optional factory rear spoiler complete the aesthetic, and there isn’t much to scrutinize about the cosmetic condition other than a few minor paint defects. Reliable, rugged, and fun to run about on a muddy trail, Japanese Classics like this Surf are at the top of their class, and for good reason!
Interior Overview
The interior boasts a few options unique to the Limited trim, like faux carbon accents and stylish charcoal cloth upholstery. Most importantly, it’s in good shape overall, and features a full slate of functional power amenities that make daily driving a walk in the park! The dash has resisted any unwanted cracks, fading, or UV distortion that commonly plague these models, and it houses dual SRS airbags to give safety conscious passengers some added peace of mind. Power amenities are also abundant, and easy to access in the center stack. Automatic climate control works like a charm, and has cold A/C and hot heat on tap. Adjacent to the HVAC is a period-correct Kenwood audio system that features the coolest LCD graphics this side of the Pacific. The sound quality is decent too for its age! Power windows, locks, and electric folding side mirrors work like a charm, and while a moonroof is present the mechanism is no longer power adjustable. Still functional, however, is the power back glass, which can be a godsend when loading oversized cargo. The rear bench can fold flat too, if additional storage space is required. The headliner and carpets are clean, and if we were to get granular with this truck’s condition the center armrest has a slit, the rear mirror does not retract, nor does the power antenna. Other than that, this cabin is a swell place to be, and a rare cargo shade is intact in the rear to keep any prying eyes off your precious goods.
Mechanical Overview
The allure of the Hilux Surf doesn’t stop at just its stylish interior and exterior. The 3.0 turbodiesel under the hood is what makes this truck really special! Our trained technicians have also stuffed this 1KZ to the brim with loads of good preventative maintenance, and this Surf cranks over with haste thanks to a new 12v battery. A fresh oil and filter service helps it chug along smoothly at idle, and the engine air filter and fuel filter were replaced as a bit of a preemptive tune up. We also addressed a leaky valve cover gasket, and replaced the half moon seal for good measure. This 1K jets right up to highway speeds and feeds a prolific amount of torque through a smooth shifting automatic gearbox. Power is put to the ground via a selective transfercase, and for the true off-road diehard, an optional center locker and 4WD low are at the ready. We did a fair amount of drivetrain rehab to prep this truck for stateside use and abuse, and we bolstered the suspension with new front lower control arms, front ball joints, and new swaybar links all the way around. The power steering system also benefits from a fresh steering rack rebuild, with new seals and inner and outer tie rods. The ABS brakes bite hard, thanks to new pads and rotors up front, and an alignment was performed up on the rack to get the most out of the brand new Falken rubber we installed all the way around.
