The Hilux Surf is a legend around the globe, and here in the states, you can say the same for the 4Runner. This 1997 is a special rig and boasts the same gasoline 4-cylinder engine offered here in the good old USA. This 4WD model is freshly lifted and finished in a stunning Black (204). Our SSR-X is set off by OEM rainguards, an optional rear spoiler, a stylish rear tire swingarm, and refinished 16" Pajero alloys. Aside from a few light dings, chips, and scratches this Surf is in good nick and comes fresh off a recent service. Having racked up only 102k verified and documented miles, this baby is barely broken in and is fresh off a recent service, which includes a refresh of its 2" lifted suspension. Fun as a daily driver, weekend overlander, or cool family hauler, this handsome Japanese Classic ticks all the boxes and is turn-key ready for an adventure.

The cabin is in above-average shape and was cared for overseas. Power windows, door locks, and electric side mirrors all function and make daily use enjoyable. The driver benefits from a tilt-adjustable steering column and adjustable lumbar support in case this is to be a commuter. The dashboard lacks any cracking or fading and dual SRS airbags are standard for those who may be safety conscious. For tunes, an Alpine radio is on standby and the audio quality is clear and crisp. The interior is upholstered in black and charcoal cloth, which delivers a sportier aesthetic than the more commonplace Moon Mist gray. The material lacks any major rips, stains, or tears and is in good nick. The same can be said for the headliner and door cards which were cared for. For utility, the middle row tumbles forward to create a flat loading floor. The rear glass also powers down to fit in some 2x4s from the local Home Depot. Aside from the power folding feature of the side mirrors giving up the ghost, and a few light carpet stains, it is hard to complain about the cockpit. Even the owner's manuals and maintenance booklets are included in the purchase.

The beauty of Surf ownership is that US 4Runner parts are interchangeable and service options are abundant. The reliable 3RZ-FE that powers this rig is the same as our stateside 2.7 and is fresh off an oil and filter service. It churns over immediately thanks to a new 12v battery and settles into a quiet idle. One of our trained techs replaced the valve cover with a new one so that the new owner doesn't have to top off this four banger with oil regularly. Linked to a stout automatic gearbox, the four-banger makes all the power necessary to merge up to our American interstate speeds without issue. It feels just as peppy at the 6-cylinder about town and is a tad more efficient, too. The selective transfer case is simple to operate and allows the driver to switch between two and four-wheel-drive on the fly. Even a low range is available for situations requiring more traction. A new front output seal was replaced to keep the 4WD system operating flawlessly, and it delivers fantastic performance overall. The highlight of this SUV is its ride quality. While up in the shop we completely refreshed the suspension and this thing feels premium now. Brand new shocks were fitted at all four corners and new extended sway bar bushings were installed to account for the 2" lift. New rear upper and lower arms were replaced as well for good measure. This Surf gobbles up potholes for lunch and feels as confident as anyone we have driven in recent memory. The ABS brakes slow down this beast to a stop in no time and the new 33" Falken rubber will provide all the grip necessary for tens of thousands of miles to come. We polished it all off with an alignment to boot! Ready to conquer our American highways and byways, this terrific Toyota is an all-around incredible truck!
