The Hilux Surf is our best-selling rig for good reason. Parts and upgrades are plentiful, the styling is universally loved, and the off-road capabilities are second to none. Add in a healthy dose of reliability and performance, and you have this 1997 intercooled turbodiesel model here. Fresh off a recent service, this Light Blue Mica Metallic (8L6) over Gray example is offered with only 147k verified and discounted miles on the ticker. Set off by a set of refinished OEM 16" alloys, a stylish rear spoiler, sport hood, and an OEM brushguard, this SSR-G model grabs loads of looks! Aside from a few light dings, chips, and scrapes the paint is in good shape, and this 4x4 is turn-key ready to rock. Ideal as a dependable daily driver, butch beach cruiser, or Moab melting trail terror, this Japanese Classic is an all-around top-tier buy!
The cabin is in above-average shape and was cared for in Japan. Entering the interior is stress-free thanks to a power locking system. The driver benefits from a tilt-adjustable steering column and adjustable lumbar support to find the ideal driving position. Dual front SRS airbags are standard for some added peace of mind. Trimmed in a Moon Mist-colored cloth, this vehicle's upholstery lacks any major rips, stains, or tears. The low-lying dash is in good nick and lacks the distortion that plagues these models. Faux wood trim breaks up the cabin aesthetics and the controls for the automatic climate control are close by, located in the center stack. Smoldering heat or cool A/C can be mixed through the cabin with the twist of a dial, and if you prefer more natural ventilation, the rear glass slides down into the hatch, and electric windows can be quickly unfurled. Daily use is improved by functional power folding mirrors and a Kenwood Bluetooth-equipped head unit. An OEM field monitor is located next to the map lights and displays information about the outside conditions should you lose cell service. When the need to accommodate extra cargo arises, the rear bench can tumble forward to create a flat loading floor. It also 4-way reclines for optimal passenger comfort. The headliner, door cards, and carpets are in good nick. Even the pricey OEM optional floor mats are included with the purchase, to protect your investment.
The highlight of the drivetrain is the legendary 1KZ-TE engine. Intercooled to make more HP and run lower exhaust gas temperatures, this version is what the enthusiasts clamor for! The 3.0L churns to life with the twist of the key and is fresh off an oil and filter service. The four-banger runs smoothly thanks to a new engine air filter and new fuel filter, and one of our trained techs replaced the serpentine belts too, to keep the electronics properly powered. Additionally, so that all that fresh dinosaur juice stays internal to the 1K, a new valve cover gasket was fashioned and we replaced the half-moon seals for some extra peace of mind. The powerplant is linked to a stout automatic gearbox. It makes good use of the low end grunt provided and shifts properly. Mated to a selective transfercase, the pilot has the option to engage both axles, or keep just the rear powered. For low traction scenarios, a low range can be engaged and a center locker deployed. To bolster the T-case, a new front output seal replaced the old weary one. The power steering is direct and communicative for a truck, and new inner and outer tie rods were replaced while up on our lift. Aided by a fresh alignment this rig drives straight as an arrow. It also brakes well, thanks to new front brake pads and rotors. For those living in snowy climates, ABS is standard on this third-generation model. Grip is handled by four new four new 31" Falken tires. These freshly mounted and balanced units quell road noise and will last for tens of thousands of miles to come!
