Exterior Overview

Back in 1997, the Toyota Hilux Surf was a dominant midsize SUV. It was powerful, capable, efficient, and handsome; just as it still is today! This Stellar Blue (8L7) turbodiesel example is fresh off a recent service, and offered with only 108k verified and documented miles on the clock. Aside from some light dings, chips, and scrapes, the paint is in good shape and this SSR-X is adorned by refinished gunmetal three-spoke OEM alloys, a spare tire swingarm, chrome tail lamp garnishes, and some OEM rainguards. Ideal as a gravel gobbling trail truck, practical pavement pounding daily, or sweet soccer shuttle, this Japanese Classic can do it all! Recently serviced and turn-key, this 4×4 is easy to service, affordable, and can get down and dirty with the best of them.

Interior Overview

The cabin isn’t bare bones by any means, and includes a few tasty factory and aftermarket upgrades. The driver can find the ideal seating position thanks to a tilt-adjustable steering column and adjustable lumbar support. To the right, the controls for the electric mirrors, power locks, and mirrors sit. All function, and make daily use more enjoyable. The center stack is dominated by a large Pioneer touchscreen. For those who value safety, Bluetooth hands-free is equipped! Above is a simple-to-use auto climate control system. Cold A/C and heat can be mixed, and if you prefer more natural ventilation, a large electric sunroof can tilt and retract. The dashboard lacks any cracking or fading, and dual SRS front airbags are standard equipment. By the map lights, an optional field monitor is mounted. It displays information such as the direction of travel, temperature, and barometric pressure, should you lose cell service. The carpets are in good nick and the door cards have fared well over the past twenty-five years. The moon mist colored upholstery is in good shape and lacks any major rips, stains, or tears. The middle row can tumble forward and create a flat loading floor. The rear bench also 4-way reclines. Aside from some imperfections on the headliner and some hazing to the Field Monitor screen, the cabin has held up well over the past couple of decades, and even the owners’ manuals and maintenance booklets are included in the purchase.

Mechanical Overview

Built atop a truck body on frame platform, this Surf was designed to take a licking. The same can be said for the powerplant, the 1KZ-TE. Fresh off an oil and filter service, the four banger chugs to life care of a new 12V battery. A new fuel filter and engine air filter work to maximize economy, and we also discovered the crossover pipe was broken, so it was replaced. To keep all the fresh oil internal to the 1K, we replaced the weary old valve cover gasket with a new one and replaced the half moon seals. Lastly, a coolant flush was ordered up, as we shifted our focus to the driveline. The automatic gearbox shifts like a champ and makes good use of the 1KZ’s low-end grunt. The driver can choose to power the rear wheels or both axles with a selective transfercase. For off-road escapades, a center locker and low range can be engaged. On the pavement it accelerates well and this rig can handle prolonged interstate use while still feeling comfortable. New rear shocks improve the ride, and we have replaced both rear axle seals to shore everything up. The ABS brakes do a fantastic job of slowing down this brute, and new front brake pads and rotors were replaced while it was on the lift. We rebuilt the steering rack for state inspection and added new tie rods prior to a fresh alignment. The 16″ wheels are mounted in fresh rubber all around. The 31″ Falken all terrain tires quell road noise, look mean, and will provide grip for tens of thousands of miles to come. Turn key and ready to roll, this terrific Toyota just needs a new owner!
