Exterior Overview

In the States, we are in love with our 4Runners. These body-on-frame trucks take loads of abuse, boast low running costs, and are highly capable. If you need a year-round daily driver, this 1997 would be perfect. Finished in a classic Stellar Blue (8L7), it’s set off by 16″ WEDS Keeler alloys, OEM rainguards, an OEM rear spoiler, and some subtle privacy tint. Aside from a few dings, scrapes, and chips, the paint is in good shape, and this rig is fresh off a recent service. Offered with a mere 124k verified and documented miles on the clock, our SSR-V is powered by the same engine sold here in the US, so sourcing parts is as easy as pie. Safe, spacious, handsome, and fun to drive with its manual gearbox, this Japanese Classic is our best-selling model for all too many reasons. Perhaps the perfect all-around SUV, this terrific Toyota needs only a new owner!

Interior Overview

The cabin is cleanly designed, spacious, and ergonomic. The driver can find the ideal driving position thanks to a tilt-adjustable steering column and adjustable lumbar support. The OEM audio is within arm’s reach and sounds decent, supplementing your commute. Above, a manual climate system doles out good A/C or piping hot heat depending on your preference. Power windows, door locks, electric rear glass, and power mirrors all work in typical Toyota fashion, making daily use more enjoyable. The dashboard lacks any cracking or fading, and dual SRS airbags are awarded to those riding up front. The moon mist gray upholstery lacks any major rips, stains, or tears. The rear bench can 4-way recline for optimal comfort, but can also tumble forward and create a flat loading floor. The headliner and door cards are in fine shape as are the carpets. Aside from some light damage to the climate vents and a non-operational clock, it’s hard to nitpick this truck. Even the maintenance booklet, an extra key, and the owner’s manuals are included with the purchase of this Surf.

Mechanical Overview

The 3RZ-FE engine is a wonderful little mill, and it’s driven by a timing chain, saving on costly belt replacements. Fresh off an oil and filter service, the 2.7L cranks to life with the twist of the key, courtesy of a new 12V battery. A new engine air filter, fuel filter, and spark plugs work to maximize power, and one of our trained techs has refreshed the 3RZ with a new valve cover gasket and half moon seal. A new radiator keeps the 2.7L running cool and a new coolant flush was performed, too. The DOHC mill is linked to a manual gearbox. The stick makes for a more engaging and lively driving experience compared to normal slushbox-equipped Surfs. Gear changes lack any grinding or hitches, and the selectable transfer case allows the driver to send torque to the rear axle, and engage 4WD when needed. The suspension has been rehabbed significantly. New rear upper and lower control arms, front lower control arms, ball joints, and inner and outer tie rods were replaced before a fresh alignment. The steering rack was also fully rebuilt, which is a pesky job! The ABS brakes feel confident and are bolstered by new front pads and rotors. Grip comes from four new 31″ tires. The new rubber looks mean, reduces road noises, and will last for tens of thousands of miles to come. Freshly aligned, it drives straight as an arrow and would be a killer daily driver, cool campsite crawler, or brash beach cruiser!
